Engine replacement

Ok,
Pretty soon I hope to be able to put a new short block in ole blue. The clutch has about 90,000 on it and it might need a new one while I'm in there.

1)I guess clutch mileage varies widely, but what is the expected life of a clutch?

2)What else should I be looking at replacing. Throwout bearing... Anthing else?

3)Any good ideas or suggestions for good clutches for towing applications?

4)I hear that the front bearings sometimes go bad on the zf tranny's. If so, how would I know? Would there be vertical and horizontal play in the shaft?

I hope to do alot of the work myself, or find a garage that might let me work with them. There's a fellow I have in mind who has a trucking company and who does alot of powerstroke clutches who I might lean on for advice and guidance, but It would be nice to be prepared. Thanks for any thoughts,
Tony

Um, it's short a few things? https://www.ford-trucks.com/dcforum/Images/biggrin.gif Auto remanufacturers sometimes sell a 'long block' and a 'short block'. A long block includes the heads and I think some include a intake manifold and maybe some other parts that are missing on the 'short block'. Mine is a local rebuild. MY 'short block' will include everything from the oil pump to the lifters. Water pump, distributor, intake, heads, carb, fuel pump, valve covers and oil pan will be taken from the other motor . I think some companies also sell "drop in motors" or complete motors. They have just about everything, up to the carb I think including the oil pans and water pumps. Some of the other guys can elaborate on this.
I guess I could lead ya astray and say that I knocked off two cylinder off the back of the motor.

I had put remanufactured heads on the truck about 10,000 miles ago. When we did the head job, my intent was to inspect the block for cracks and wear in the cylinder walls, etc. Well, the guys at the garage didn't turn the crank over, but just viewed each cylinder as it was. (I was there too when the heads came off, so it's partly my blame) Anyhow, on my first trip a seeping oil pan gasket became a oozing oil pan gasket, probably because of increased blowby. So, I pulled the oil pan and what to my wandering eyes do appear, but a large split in that cylinder front near. Ok, so the timing chain flops like a trout on the bank too.... maybe that's why it wants to shut off when i back off the throttle..a timing change,...hmmm. Yeah, some of the guys 'told me so'(on this board) And yeah, I wanted to do a leakdown and compression test, but the garage talked me into a "cylinder balance test" or something like that. The results weren't good, but I thought maybe a blown head gasket and a couple burnt valves were the problem. So, first the head job. So now it's time for the rest of the project.

I WONDER IF MICRON LEXAR KNOWS ABOUT THIS NEW MARKET FOR MEMORY?

Survey - Shortblock to a machine shop has always meant block, crank, rods, pistons, rings, cam, associated bearings, timing chain and freeze (expansion) plugs. Other than the timing chain, if it has to be bolted onto the block itself, you're getting into the definition of a long block.

Long block - everything but the fuel delivery and ignition systems, clutch/torque plate and exhaust manifolds. Beyond that, it's into a 'ready to run' engine definition.
