If you've been reading the 73-79 boards, you'll see i'm looking at a 77 f-150 w/a 460, and wondered what i could expect for gas mileage. sorry, but i don't know if any mods have been done to the motor whatsoever, but it's a playtoy, so i wouldn't be surprised. if none have been, what's the average? is it as bad as my dad says? (5-8)? will the severe lift kit effect mileage at all? thanks guys!
i just read an I6 post saying 11-14 mpg was common. so i should only be frightened by the fact that a lot more gas is gonna be gettin used and not that mileage will be bad?
My big block 4x4 f250 can only get 8mpg if im lucky. the best ive ever seen was 8.5, but ive gone through tanks that only averaged 4. ive never done a lot of highway driving with it, but if i did i think it would be getting around 9 with my setup. you asked if lifting it would hurt milage...i assume you would be getting huge tires with that. without a gear change, you would probably get a little worse milage around the city since the engine would have to work harder, but in theory, you could get better milage on the highway seeing as taller tires would bring your cruising rpm's down. theres only one way to find out though right?
I got a 78' Lincoln towncar that's probably as heavy as a F-150, it's got a 460/C6 and gets 10mpg in town. I've never driven it for long on the highway.
My truck is 2wd. on the highway w/ 3.50 rear, and about 28" tall tires I get about 9-10mpg doing 65-70mph. City driving I get about 9-10mpg as well. No noticable difference w/ a/c or without in the summer. I also have to use 93 octane since my motor is warmed up a bit. Just make sure it has dual tanks and don't worry about it. Especially if it will run 87. I can get 87 for 97 a gallon as of today.
