WALJON there are oil rings that work just like a piston rin on the shaft of the turbo. They usually wear a groove in the center section. here is a pic of the turbo shaft. To the left of the bronze bushings just before the exhuast wheel you can jsut see a ring going around the shaft. that is the oil seal.
Nice pic tim does the turbo come apart ok or is it a pita
the turbo was just off not long ago so that part should go easy but to get at that shaft is it hard?
rebuilding the turbo is easier than getting it off the truck!! The problem may come in by know what parts are worn but we should be able to figure it out.

Well I appreciate that Tim ,should I also be seeing oil on the ped with this problem ? and is there a rebuild kit for the turbo seals and such
No this leak isn't related to any oil you could see on the pedestal. There are rebuild kits that have the oil seals but the problem is that the ring wears the other surface. In my case the turbo in my pics is the one I had a thrust bearing failure and I just checked it and the oil seal did wear into part of the center section though I beleive it is replaceable, but the intake side also wears.
See the ring inside the center hole. that is not supposed to be there. This pics is of the intake side base plate. the exhuast side is cast iron but it also has a ring wore into it.
It looks like the old owner had a SD wheel in the turbo.
Is it?
Bill
Yeah it was already rebuilt once by a turbo shop from the looks of it. Poorly I might add! Check out the grinder marks to get it to balance out!! Needless to say the new turbo was a bit more professional!!
Yes pretty much once it wears those parts it cheaper to get a rebuild turbo than to fix that one. here is the guy I recommend. He treated me very well, answered all my questions (called three times and he was very helpful) and sold me a great turbo and had no problem working with me.
if you don't see what you need call the number in his auction and talk to him http://stores.ebay.com/Rons-Turbo-Service-801-842-9186
too bad I don't know who did it!! truck was in three different states by the time I bought it! Was able to track down the tranny shop that did the tranny though. Still couldn't get much info from them other than it has an upgraded TC and it had a new factory downpipe installed at the same time. Guess how much a factory downpipe will run you.....$700!!
It sounds like its coming from the turbo to me too. I've seen them go back before on tractors. Although, the turbo is generally a lot more accessible than our beasts. $600 for a new turbo sounds like a pretty good deal to me.
