Can any c6 be used for a 4x4. Does it require alot of modification. Can you use the transfer case from the old one and turn it into a 4x4. The C6 I have needs a complete rebuild. Its hooked to a 351M.
Your 351M engine has the same bellhousing bolt pattern as the 400, 429, and 460 engines. A 2 wheel drive transmission will work but will require you to change out the tail shaft and housing so you can mount your transfer case. While you have it apart ensure that the transfer case shift linkage, piviot bolt and bushings are all up to specs. My shifter pivot bolt mount hole was really wallered out and the bushings were shot. I had to have it drilled out and a heli-coil installed but what a difference it made in the overall shift linkage feel and performance. It doesn't vibrate and buzz when driving anymore and the shifts are very precise.
Any C6 will work, but you have to tear the whole thing apart to change out the tail shaft. So one might as well just rebuild the one that was in it. One thing to watch out for if you change the case, if your truck uses the neutral safety switch on the case, some cases don't have provisions for the bolt holes that hold the switch on.
Thanks for the information. I'll most likely do a rebuild on mine if there are no major internal hardware problems. Here is my next problem. The shift collar broke and I would really rather not cut the harness if possible. How do you change it without cutting it?
