Well ive finally got everything i need to install my stacks except for a length of pipe to run from the engine to Y pipe for stacks.
Im still not sure how im going to do this so im hoping to get some feedback from you guys that already have stacks.
Ive decided that im going to ditch the muffler for sure. The y pipe for my stacks is 5 inch. So i was either going to cut out all of the old exhaust from the y off the manifolds and use a adapter to bring it up to 4 inches and then run a length of 4 inch pipe to the bed area then bring it up to 5 inches for the stacks y pipe.
...Or im just going to bring it up to 5 inch right after the y from manifolds and run a length of 5 inch pipe from the engine right into the stacks.
I just dont know what to do because i want it to still sound good and sound like a diesel truck. I would hate to get all the stacks install...fire it up and take it for a drive and think wow this sounds like ****.
If it matters i dont have a turbo yet...someday as soon as money is available i will though.
to be honest with ya, with no turbo the trucks gonna sound like a old dump truck. i tryed throwing on a single chamber flow didnt help any also tryed a glass pack still no go. sorry bud thats just the sound ur going to get a loud old big block! but the stacks sure look good right?
You need to start with at least 3" pipe from in front of where the two manifold downpipes come together in the Y.
A non turbo IDI with no muffler is going to be LOUD.
This is about what you want to do after you come through the bed floor.
An do make provisions to keep stuff in the bed from sliding into the pipes, they get very hot.
If you keep the main pipe from the Y back close to the stock location, when you install the turbo the turbo down pipe will be very close to working without changing much.
take a look in my gallery. i haven't changed the pipe to 4" from the motor yet, but it won't be that hard to do. I used a piece of 6x6 square tubing with the ends capped off. big block sound for sure, but from the smoke, and the lovely diesel smell, there is no confusion.
the cheapest way to do stacks is to take a semi tip from a junkyard (about $20) and take a metal plate with a 3 or 4 in hole cut out of it and 4 holes on the corners of the square plate and weld it to the bottom of the stack so the 4 holes on the corners (for bolting it to the bed) are on the outside of the stack obviously and then weld a 3 or 4 inch od piece of exhuast tubing onto the plate. cut a hole in your bed along with 4 holes for mounting it ( using the plate as a template). then run exhaust however you would like so it runs up to the hole in your bed. Hook everything up and then you are done. It only ran me about 80 bucks and it looked just as good as those 600 dollar kits. Not to mention it is solid in the bed so you dont need to buy any expensive clamps for the stack itself.
A good idea to stop noise is to cut a piece of mudflap or something to act as a bushing between the metal plate and the bed.
some people dont like to jimmy rig stuff like that but thats what I did cuz its cheap solid and easy.
i took a piece of tubed steel and cut two holes in it for my pipes and cut two holes in the bottem for my exhaust to run into and then cut a slit in it and put a plate of steel so the exhaust run out of both sides so its true duals all the way out. it only costed about 60 bucks and looks good too.
