I just picked up a 77' 4x4, long bed 150 with a 351w. It has a Holley carb. It turns over nice and has ignition, but has carb backfire. I havn't touched anything yet. I did check the firing order and it is correct. Should i turn the timing a bit? Or is this a bad idea?
Double and triple check your firing order, and make sure you have the correct one. You might have a 302, which had 2 different firing orders, depending on the year/camshaft you use. I would verify your timing is set correctly before you fool with anything. If the truck does not run to check it, you can still check it while the engine is cranking over. Does it run at all? What is the story on the truck? Was it a field rescue, the the PO do something to it, now it does not run, we need more info to help you diagnose your problem over the internet.
The valve cover says 351w, Do the covers fit other engines. The truck was bought from a local contractor. When I bought it he said that one year ago it ran great. When he started it up, it ran really rough like it was flooding itself for about 5 minutes. It then began to backfire. It hasn't ran since. It will fire and putter a little bit, but wont run for more than 30 seconds.

Sounds like the carb needs to be rebuilt, possibly bad diaphragm or stuck float.
Try pushing the gas pedal to the floor and cranking it up, may get all that excess gas out of the fuel bowl and it may run somewhat better. Just a thought.
After some checking its a 351M/400. Does this make any difference? I went out tonight and it fired right away and ran at a very poor sputter for about 30 seconds. I held it on the floor trying to clear the carb, but it just backfired through the carb. It would restart but never clear itself out. I just keeps having fire in the carb.
I would venture a guess as well, that the truck is running too rich, or the choke is stuck. Is the carb a 2 barrel, or a four? If it is a four, I would venture a guess that the backfiring blew the power valve. Blown power valves dump lots of gas. If you can get it to fire again, pin the throttle till it clears up, and try to keep it running, unless it sounds really horrible. Have a buddy keep on the lookout for fuel leaks, and keep a class B(C02) fire extinguisher handy just in case it backfires, and starts a fire.
For the sake of saying you did it, can you pull a couple of sparkplugs and tell us what you see? Double check your timing again.
I figured it out. It was one of those simple problems. One of the distributor cap posts was cracked and leaning to one side. I put on a new cap and button and it ran pretty good. Thanks to all the input
