Removing crank pulley

How does one remove the crank pulley? Is it bolted in the center of the pulley or does one need a pulley/gear puller to remove it from the shaft? Thanks

Usually you will need a puller and maybe a selection of strong bolts that will fit the holes in the pulley.

I have never played with an engine that didn't require a puller.

BTW Be sure you have a horking big breaker bar and torque wrench to reinstall the pulley. Usually you will not be able to push the pulley back on the crank, you will have to crank the giant sized bolt to press it back on and then torque it to spec, usually at least 200 ft pounds.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

Removing crank pulley

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-May-02 AT 01:11 PM (EST)]the crank pulley is just bolted on w/four bolts to the damper.

the vibration damper is pressfit, your local parts store should have a suitable puller. you place the puller's centering bolt through the puller into the middle of the crankshaft, thread two bolts into the pulley holes in the damper and then turn the puller until the damper falls off.

Removing crank pulley

hey man, just a bit of advice, when you go to put it back on, spend the money and get a balancer installer. they can be tough to find, but its worth it. ive used mine a half dozen times already, and i paid 40 for it. got it from comp cams. and its universal. dont pull the balancer back on with the balancer bolt, you could shear the bolt or if you're really good you could break the balancer. and please dont beat it back on. these things are called balancers for a reason, dont beat on it. but as for a puller, you can get a universal one for a few bucks at the local parts store. easy as pie to pull. good luck and hope this helps.

Removing crank pulley

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 16-May-02 AT 04:15 AM (EST)]You can easily make your own balancer installation tool for the 351M,400, and the 460. Just go to your local hardware store or NAPA and grab a chunk of 5/8 inch, fine thread, all thread. Cut off about 7-8 inches of it, also buy a 5/8 in. fine thread, grade 8 nut. Use the big washer from your balancer bolt. And you have an instant, installation tool for less than ten bucks. And it works great!

And by the way the torque specs for the dampner bolt is 70 - 90 ft.lbs.

Also use a couple of 3/8 in. coarse thread grade 8 bolts about 2" long to thread in the pulley holes on the front of the dampner, then you can use a big flat blade screwdriver or small pry bar to hold the crank still while loosening or tightening the dampner bolt.
