Yeah, would help to know your gearing. If you are running 3.08's with an automatic, gearing your rearend lower would be the best start. That is, if you are tuned up.
I know it has to be geared. We were talking 4:10's. Its more the motor I am after. Its got about 250000km's.
WA1986F-250:what do you mean about an RV Cam?
I plan on going with a 4 barrel, my buddy is a chevy guy doing the work, he says he is sure ford runs better with a bit smaller carb say 600 cfm is this true?
An RV cam is used for heavy duty towing or RVs and gives you more low to mid range torque without affecting idle or mileage too much. It is a popular upgrade to give you more power without having to change anything else. For a stock engine, the 600cfm carb will be a nice wake up.
Of course, if you want more power then you'd start replacing pistons, matching it up with a bigger cam and carb. But an easy start would be to add headers, an intake, and an RV cam. Of course, giving the engine a tune up would help to get the ball rolling.
Rebuild. The 351w is used around here a lot for racing. Most of the guys put new heads and intake manifold, headers and performance cam. The 4bbl ends up needing to be 650 cfm or more. The cam is important because the stock cam doesn't allow the engine to breath well enough. Exhaust setting is too short by a few degrees. Boring out the cylinders and putting new pistons in to match the heads will help. I was going to bore mine out .40 over but it already was. The machine shop I use (they build racing engines) doesn't like to bore out more than necessary because the walls get too thin. I got a new block from him and it is going to be bored .20 over. That way the cylinders will be nice and straight. As soon as I get the fly wheel and harmonic balancer to him he is going to balance the rotating assembly to 10000 RPM. With my new cam I should get 50hp more and better mileage, plus I'll have a lot of low end torque. When everything is said and done I'll put the truck on a dynamo and see what's what. My engine had 280000 miles on it.
