You're not alone 93. I have a masters in computing and I still use a book and pencil.
You would have to fill up each and every time for any kind of mileage calculations to be of any value.

That reminds me, for millage calcualtions, I use one of those small 2x4 pocket note books. Fits in the glove compartment, map pocket, dash, whereever, takes a second to jot down the millage, how much I paid per gal, simple calc of millage between last fill and date. That way you can immediately have a rough estimate (if you suck at simple math like me, but I am a wiz with calculas, who'd have thought?) of your millage.
Heck I learned this method from my father, and he learned it from his, if it isn't broke, why try to fix it?
I use this
The standard version for $20.95 works good & you can input any maintenace item you like or input your own. Works out MPG''s tracks all repairs & modifications, look up recalls etc. You can try it for free for 30 days, see how you like it! Can track multiple vehicles. Set reminders etc.

I always write my milage on the receipt. I save the receipts, and use them to glean any information I might need. I keep the receipts in the ashtray till I am ready to file them away.

Some tips. Change oil, when it looks too dark, change spark plugs when you have misfire problems, lubricate all in suspention (BJs, UJs, tie rod ends) before and after winter time, check CVs too.
Every time you are under your van, retorque all in susupentioun you see, and engine mounts. Sometimes drive w/o stereo on. Hear for unusual sounds, noises, nocks.
Lubricate door locks, sliding door mechanics, check for window leaks and fix with silicone.
Lubricate power windows too. They may stuck too.
