02 exolorer problem
Ford put out a bad batch of 4wd control modules.
My moms 03' Expl. had a bumping noise that we thought was in the front end. After the third dealer looked at it they finally figured out the 4wd control module was bad and it would go into 4wd and bump on acceleration. Once the module was replaced, no more bumping. (Not covered by the extended warrenty)
My grandfather has an 02' Expl. w/4.6l. His was stuck into 4wd and he couldn't get it out. He took it to the dealer several times until they figured out that the 4wd control module was bad. $900 later his explorer was finally out of 4wd and working right. The dealer kept replacing parts until they figured it out, at his expense.
I like the pre 02 explorer 4wd setup much better. If you need 4X4 push the button. I'm not a fan of AWD, never was.
Just a heads up on the 4wd module situation.
The shop called and said that after replacing that the truck sounds 100% better. They still hear a little noise from the front tires...suspecting the bearings, which I thought might be bad myself. I thought swapping the front tires to the rear would have helped that, but doesn't look like it did. I'm guessing to replace the bearings it's going to be another $300-500 - I hope not more. I would do that myself, but it's been a little cold and rainy here...not fun to work on vehicles with those conditions.
Once I pick the truck up, I'll let ya'll know how it feels and sounds to me.
After spending all this money I can at least say I got a pretty decent truck with decent miles on it.

The truck has 47,000 on it.
$2000 to replace the ring and pinion.
$400.00 to replace a solenoid in the trans.
$300.00 to flush and service the trans.
$139.00 to flush and bleed the brake fluid.
$26.49 for oil change.
$168.00 for coolant flush
It is without a doubt the most expensive car that I've ever owned.
I got 3,500 out of it before it went in for service and all of the problems cropped up.
I used the dealer to get the repairs done under warranty. Otherwise they're way over priced.
I thinking about trading it in on a Grand Cherokee.......couldn't be much worse.
The T/C was the most expensive, and then the bearings at $379.95.
The mechanic called me up and said after all the repairs it's a really nice truck! LOL
Now to start paying down the credit card that was only $300 prior to all this work.
02 XLT Explorer with 88K miles - hope it goes to at least 188K =)
