Just to throw it out there - if this does end up needing a new tranny, is it worth it to put one in?

Depends on how long you intend to keep it.

I keep mine until they rot away,
92 (450),
97 (350),

shssss! even a 99 tracker (150)

Cheaper to fix than make payments....

Will plan to keep at least 1-2 years. I trade it for a new vehicle to make payments, but would if I had to for another used vehicle. Wasn't sure what the best plan of attack was to be. I'm guessing a new tranny with labor is going to run anywhere between 2500-3500.

So worse case senario it would cost 146.00 a month, over the 2 yrs. What could you buy or lease for that?

Let us know the outcome.

I noticed you did not really say that the transmission is not working properly, except that the engine makes a lot of noise in some conditions. I would not consider replacing the transmission if it is working ok. Replacing the fluild can't hurt though.

As far as the noise, do you know that is not the fan clutch locked up, causing the fan to turn too fast?

Milisivina: Sorry to double post here, but I re-read all your posts and you mention several times about the engine noise. Just to press the point - you can see if it's the fan easily. With the truck in park, rev the engine from low idle to fast idle (2000-2500) slowly, and listen for a change in the fan speed. You can definitely hear when it stops spinning at engine speed. I have been wrong many times before, so am risk being wrong here, if it can help with your problem.

Good idea for the test. However doing that did not cause the sound to increase at all. I hear the sound a little while driving and hear it more at speeds about 50mph.

If the fan sound doesn't diminish at fast idle, your fan clutch is probably locked up. I have replaced several. It will require a special tool, which you can borrow at the parts place where you purchase the new one.

I would have someone watch the fan while I tested the idle again. They can tell if it's working properly. I wouldn't want you to buy something you didn't need.

What I meant was...I didn't hear any loud noise like I did while driving with just sitting idle and running the RPM's up.

It's Monday...so waiting to hear back from the Tranny shop hopefully in a few.

Explorers are known for tranny problems. Even with reg service.

My sisters 95' Sport 4.0l had the tranny go out at 50k and again at 160k. Just got a reman tranny, new converter, shift kit/valve body mod fluid and install at a local shop, $1575 including tax with a 2 year unlimited mile warrenty. They installed a shift kit and installed a valve body mod thats supposed to make the tranny last longer and reduce the chance of burnt bands and broken snap rings. I talked to the owner and he has been installing the kit in late model 02 up Explorer cop cars with good results, he said the tranny shifts better than new with the kit. ($300 installed)

He had an 06' Merc mountaineer at the shop with a crapped out tranny.

My moms 03' explorer tranny took a rebuild at 50k also, luckily it was under warrenty. Going to get the valve body mod installed on it for her.

The transmission shop will be able to tell you if the codes relate to the tranny. I gave the guy I dealt with the code #s over the phone and he told me what they ment without even looking them up.

Could someone please explain to me why those morons at Ford did not put a tranny dipstick on 02' up explorers.

WOW that sounds like a really, really good price for all of that. Where do you live?
