I have an 02 Explorer with 65000 miles. The "service engine soon" light came on. I canceled the light but it came back on. Is there a way to retrieve codes without using a handheld/scanner. My 96 Ram has OBDII and all I have to do is cycle the ignition switch a few times and it gives codes. Does the Explporer have the same capabilities. Is there a common reason for the light to come on. Thanks in advance.

Heck just drive it by autozone or some other parts store that offers that free code read......just try not to listen to their free now but it will probably cost you alot later auto repair advice.....
As far as I know there is no way to display codes on these like you can the Dodges... HOWEVER on some you can hold in the Mileage reset button on the instrument cluster while turning the key on. It will go through an auto test procedure, and once it does you can release the button and press it several times and cycle through "self test" information. Eventually it will display an OBD-II like code (P0865 or something of the like).. but the few times I've tried this, the code it displayed was completely different than the code that the scanner pulled... so good luck with it.
