WOW that sounds like a really, really good price for all of that. Where do you live?
The shop is Arbogast Transmission in Sinking Spring, Pa.
All the Ford dealer ever wants to do is throw in a reman tranny. The first transmission put in my sisters 95' expl. was a Ford reman put in at the Ford dealership, that bill was just under $2k back in 98'. Using a local transmission shop can be much cheaper IF you find one that does good work, knows what there doing and stands behind their work.
My sister doesn't know much of anything about cars so I help her out when she has problems.
Little too far to take my truck to HAHA. I called Ford - was just curious - to see how much a reman'd tranny would be. Parts and labor would be damn near 4K.

Holy crap.
Of course a 95' has the 4spd and the 02' has a 5spd but I wouldn't think there would be a big diff in price between the two.
The stealerships hour rate is way high, that runs the price up quick.
Holy crap is right - thats $1200 in there just for the labor...thats at a minimum too.
Anyhoo...heard back from the tranny shop. They said I'm gonna need a new transfer case. From a quick search on the internet, I see transfer case and transfer assy. I'm guessing ya buy them as a pair. It's about $450 for the two from the internet. Lets see what the Tranny shop wants to charge me, then plus labor. They already drained it, so I'm gonna tell em to fill it with Mercon V (it's that a roman number or pronouced "V"?).
well, the transfer case from the shop wasn't as cheap as online
Not knowing a whole lot, the transfer case is the 4x4 unit, not anything to do with the tranny - stupid me!
Not sure if that would cause the O/D light to come on during long drives though or not. He did say that the tranny was good. Having him also drain the tranny and replace filter.
there is not much to go wrong in the T/C.
I rebuilt mine 3 yrs ago, 3hr job.
Most likely the ***** on the cam lock are stuck, poor maint, lack of fluid changes...
Sounds like that must have been what it was - poor maint. Figured while they were replacing the T/C, I'd also have them do the fluid flush and new filter on the tranny too. No telling what the previous did or didn't do with the vehicle.
Hopefully this will solve any problems that were happening.
Disconnect the battery, this will reset ucu and drive for a while, the engine will be rougher than usual till it learns what the sensors are telling it- then see if the warning ligts come back- if they do you need to fix the faults asap!

I'll try that! I'm going to have my wife take it to work a few times and see if the O/D light comes back on as well. She drives farther to work then I do - driving 10mins to and from work wasn't causing the light to come on at all.
reman'd T/C $1500 Sounded real expensive to me, but kinda late now. Ford dealer wanted even more. 3yr unlimited miles.
That is not bad, cost me $1000.00 in parts to do a complete overhaul. Chain and sprockets, bearings, clutch pack, actuator coil and seals. Now I dump the ATF @ 25K and switch back and forth from 2 to 4L at least once a month(keeps the shift motor working).

The transfer case wasn't good, that's why they have to replace it. Thats what was causing the "loud" noise. It was always running in 4x4.
I didn't know the transfer case going bad could cause the O/D to come on occassionly.
Why was it always in 4wd?
Ford put out a bad batch of 4wd control modules.
My moms 03' Expl. had a bumping noise that we thought was in the front end. After the third dealer looked at it they finally figured out the 4wd control module was bad and it would go into 4wd and bump on acceleration. Once the module was replaced, no more bumping. (Not covered by the extended warrenty)
My grandfather has an 02' Expl. w/4.6l. His was stuck into 4wd and he couldn't get it out. He took it to the dealer several times until they figured out that the 4wd control module was bad. $900 later his explorer was finally out of 4wd and working right. The dealer kept replacing parts until they figured it out, at his expense.
I like the pre 02 explorer 4wd setup much better. If you need 4X4 push the button. I'm not a fan of AWD, never was.
