did about a half hour searching and didnt find the answer i wanted.... just filled the tank and bought diesel kleen... dont know if the PO used additives or anything... so if i use the correct ammount of diesel kleen will it knock off a bunch of crap in my tank and clogg my filter "just replaced yesterday"..... or should i be fine? if i need to eez into it what do you reccomend? half amount the first tank and full the next tank... or the first two tanks just use half the amount? and afler useing an additive for the first time is it a good idea to swap out the fuel filter after a few tanks?
It would have to have an extreme amount of junk in there for a regular dose to clog the filter. If it were me I'd be starting off with a double dose. If something is going to break free, then the sooner you get it out the better. If you're really worried carry a spare filter with you, but I think you'll be ok.
I double dosed for several tanks after I started using it and never had any clogging issues. I did change filter after a coulpe of months just to be sure. Do like Chris said and you should be fine. And like he said, if the gunk is in there you need to get it out.
If you really want to clean out the system, find a fuel station that has BioD. Start with a few tanks of B5 and then if you can work up to B20 or so. Kinda like a colonic for your truck. It'll clean it and add some lubricity as well.
I don't know what year your truck is, but I started using DK just after I got mine at the regular dose, then I started using Bio occasionally over the summer (one tank of B20, then B100). Never had a fuel filter problem, and when I changed it, there was hardly anything in it. When I did the in-tank mods, I was quite surprised at how clean the tank was. Completely spotless. Personally, I think the fuel filter getting clogged isn't very common. Nothing wrong with carrying a spare filter & strap wrench just in case, though. I've never actually heard of anyone having the problem. I say run it at the regular doses, and if you can get the bio, go ahead and run it. Since it's winter, I'm not sure what the availability of mixes above B20 is. Bio likes to gel sooner than dino, so if you're in a cold climate, that may be the most you can get. I'm not much of a BD expert, though -- YMMV.
In a nutshell the reports shows that if you are unlucky and get untreated fuel (lubricity additives not added at the terminal/jobber) than DK will not bring the lubricity level high enough to meet the federal standard, resulting in higher wear. The products that were in the top 9 will.
