i have an 05 powerstroke super duty and i just noticed that my backlighting is not working on my headlight switch. this is the small green backlighting that comes on when the lights are turned on. all of the lights still work and all of the backlighting in the dash still works as well as the function of the dimmer switch. i have my gauges running off the blue/white wire under the dash and they still work - just not the headlight switch. any ideas for a fix? thanks
thanks for the diagram but i did already know how to get the headlight switch out. ive had my dash apart over the weekend for a stereo install and thought maybe i pinched a wire or something.
but where is the lamp socket on the back of the switch - do i have to remove the two tiny bolts?

I need to back away from my previous information. I was thinking of a thread I responded to concerning the 4X4 switch and it had a exterior access lamp.
The headlamp switch I have not messed with. Attached is a wiring diagram that show it having an internal illumination lamp. Might have to explore on that one.
thanks for the new diagram - that is what i was really looking for so i could probe the illumination wire and see if i can light up the backlighting with a 9 volt battery. i got the fog light orange indicator lamp to do this.
i dont know what the problem is - all of my dash lights and everything work so i dont know why the backlighting on the switch isnt working. i think im going to try a new headlight switch or end up just living with it even though it worked a few days ago.
just in case anyone wanted an update, i bought a new headlight switch for $68 from the dealer and everything works perfect. i think the bulb probably burned and was unserviceable from what i looked at when i almost broke the old switch.
I just replaced my instrument cluster lights with LED's and noticed the headlight switch is not backlit. I removed the switch and found the bezel was already loose. I was then able to remove the headlight switch from the "casing" by prying out two latches on the outside and sliding the switch out. The dimmer can then be removed by using needlenose pliers to push two small latches at the bottom inner of the casing that latches against the plug prongs. I then removed the dimmer wheel and soldered in one of the working bulbs I removed from the instrument cluster.
