It seems that I remember late 60s early 70s mercury cougars could be ordered with a two speed rear axel, low gear for around town and high for highway.Anyone know about this and if such a beast is out there could this rear be used in af100?

No such thing, and if it were, whatever it was, would also have been available on other Ford products, not just Mercury's.
The only 2 speed rear end available in Ford's and Merc's = factory installed, was the Columbia 2 speed rear end offered 1939/48.
1960's Mustangs & Cougars, other Fords: The Hone 2 speed "rear end" was available = aftermarket. The unit bolts to the front of the rear end, behind the driveshaft. A friend has one in a 1967 Shelby GT 350.
There's a separate shift lever on the floor. How he drives it: First he shifts the (4 speed) transmission to 2nd, then shifts the rear end to high. Then continues thru the gears.

I would think the Cougar units have to be a extremely rare animal and if you could find one it would cost $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ It woud be a lot more feasible to install a newer transmission with O/D.

Cougar, Mustang = whatever:
No 2 speed rear end listed in ANY Ford parts or Muscle parts catalog = nothing.
The only thing available then was the Hone setup mentioned above, which was never installed at the factory.

While I cannot say for sure that it was from a Cougar, there was a shade-tree mechanic around here that did this swap and put them in RV's during the 70's when gas was getting out-of-sight. I don't remember the details because at the time I was in grade school, but I do remember he was taking them from Mercurys. If I recall correctly, he did about 4 or 5 of them and after that he couldn't find any more rear ends. I do remember that it seemed to be an almost direct bolt in.
Like another poster stated, perhaps they were aftermarket, but I do know he WAS getting them from Mercury cars.

As a Ford partsman from 1962 thru the 1990's, I can tell you that any so called Ford 2 speed rear end installed in cars at the factory is a PIPE DREAM.
It does not exist.
1970's RV's were built on F350, Econoline E350 or P500 one ton chassis.
F350's, E350's and P500's used Dana 70's.
How, pray tell, could something two speed used on a Ford 8 or 9 inch rear end possibly work on a Dana 70?
In two words: Im Possible!
btw: the highest gas prices reached in the 1970's in SoCal (usually the highest price in the US) was $1.25 a gallon for regular unleaded Union 76 in 1979.

BULL SCHEISS!
SHOW ME THE FRIGGEN FORD PART NUMBER!
YOU CAN'T, BECAUSE THERE ISN'T ONE - STRICTLY OFFERED AFTERMARKET.
I don't give a damn what someone posted. Typical internet bullspit!
Crimney, what's next...a 5 speed electric overdrive available on Pinto's?
I'll give $100.00 US dollars for the first person to give me a VALID Ford part number.

If you read the article, it was a Dana-Spicer rear end; there's a cross-section illustration of it too. This was not a production car though; about 6 of the '69 Mercury Eliminators were built for testing and publicity purposes. Somebody said the rear end was based on a Dana/Spicer 53.
It was another Skunkworks project, I sure would like to find one.
Numberdummy, take a chillpill man, not everything that went on at Ford or anyother manufacture made it into the parts manual, especially back during the motor wars.
Just last year I drove some Fords that came off the assembly line that were special ordered, they're not going to be in the "Books".
