Hi guys , I'm trying to do 4x4 conversion on my f600. Running into troubles sourcing parts for Rockwell axels. I'd like to use my existing rear axel and just swap In the 4x4 front but need to determine the gearing. Is there a way to determine gear ratio from the vin tag?
Front 4x4 Rockwell has the tag still on it it's a 06.80 ratio. The rear axel is in a 78 fire truck with a two speed eaton on it. But haven't been able to locate a tag yet? Is it possible that this axel is the same ratio? I understand that in 4x4 the 2speed option won't be viable. I really have no use for ten speeds anyway. Also I have a set of locking hubs to go in the front axel. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Ok, did some more cleaning and now can read some numbers. On the chuck side I can see that it has eaton stamped into it at the 5:00 location. At about 4:00 it has 74038 stamped. At about 2:00 it has some more markings (two rows) stamped that can't be read at this time. Think I need to take some cleaner and a tooth brush to it.
F3N: F3 = Eaton model 15201 Two Speed Rear Axle / 6.33/8.81 / 15,000 lbs. Rear Axle Capacity // N = Ford 9,000 lb. Capacity Front Axle with Power Steering.
Knowing this, do you think using a Rockwell front axel with a ratio of 6.80 and the Eaton w/ ratio 6.33 would cause problems if used primarily on the beach? I have locking hubs on the Rockwell so on pavement it would be 2 wheel drive???
Do the math on revolutions per mile, and break it down to shorter distances. (not sure what tire you are going to run, and the first thing we need is that)
Hi Numbers Dummy.
Thanks for the great info. Do you know if I can still get parts for the Rockwell steering axel? All the parts numbers are old will they cross reference with new numbers?? We would like to break it down and go through it but will be in trouble if I can't locate parts. Gaskets and seals and such.
Jim

How many specific parts do you want? All are most likely obsolete, but probably can be found NOS.
I have the FoMoCo O-S-I (Obsolete-Supercede-Interchange) catalogs, used to cross reference old parts numbers to new.
There's a cross reference section at the end of the 1973/79 catalog, OEM part numbers to manufacturer part numbers.
But, this is a time consuming PITA, so I would prefer to do it by "Ameche" rather than type all this jazz in a post.
