Hey guys, I need some advise on picking a cam for my 77 f250 460 W/ automatic. I would like to add some HP along with some torque. Should I go with a RV cam or someting else. Also currently I am running a edelbrock 600cfm but I plan on replacing it with a 750cfm. Not sure what brand I'll go with yet. Thanks
I agree...stay low on your lift..much easier on your valvetrain for daily driving. I'm running the Crane Powermax 272/286 cam with .524/.519lift with the 1.73 rockers and 216/228@50. Motor is very strong pulling..great torque. I love the cam! Goodluck!
Oh yea...Crane Cams had a special on that camshaft...if they are still doing it..they are giving back a large rebate on the camkit with lifters and cam. Final cost I think was in the $120 range.
Thanks for the help guys. This board really helps out the guys that are new to modifying. I also ordered a edelbrock 750cfm yesterday, I'll put it on today. I hope it works better than my 600cfm. Between the carb. and the cam. I should see some proformance difference.
THANKS
edelbrock 750 is what I run..very consistent. I like it for tuning up one time and let it go..Holleys are better for horsepower...but to me it seems that edelbrock is really consistent. And do make sure you use the early model timing set...GOOD LUCK! My best time on street tires is 8.80 at 78.3mph in the 1/8.
Holly build fuel injection systems that fit on carbs, its a throttle body system but works much better, why use a carb when you can bolt on fuel injection and gain Hp and fuel milage at the same time, pay a little more now get alot more latter, that is what i plan on doing.
The kit comes with the throttle body, fuel pump everything but the labtop computer. O ya if your run a knew style distributor it can control your timming to, you can even set up different fuel/timming maps for lets say fuel milage or all out power, why play around with a carb??
I have no personal experience with them, but there are always a lot of used Holly injection systems for sale and I've never heard positive comments about them from users on other forums.
Try the CompCams 268h 218/218 @.050. It makes lots of power in mine, Also, no matter what cam you install, make sure to use matching valve springs!! And be sure to properly break-in the cam per the manufacturers instructions. Usually 2000rpm for 20 min. before idling.
I am running the Comp Cams Xtreme 4x4 34-235-4 cam in my 460 which is in my 3.50 geared Bronco. its 218/226 514/524. People told me that this cam wouldn't work well from the low end / starting, but in fact it gives me great low-end torque and 11mpg with a edlebrock 750 carb.
