how do i know its a 460?

how do i know its a 460?
i recently bought a 63 f100 and the guy i bought it from says that the engine in it is a 77 lincoln 460. how can i be sure that is true? can you id an engine the same way you can id a truck (read the vin# and all that)?

A quick check to do would be to look at the intake and see if there is a casting number starting with D7------- or something similar, a more detailed look would be to look on the heads above the exhaust manifolds and look for a similar casting number. And then, you can crawl under the truck and look at the bottom of the engine near one of the oil pan rails and look afor a casting number there, too.....

The only number that'll tell you for sure if it's a 429 or 460 is on the side of the crankshaft front counterweight. 429 will be 4U, 460 2Y or 3Y. Stroke is the only difference between the two engines.
Sometimes dished pistons are an indicator that it's a 460, but many aftermarket 429 pistons were dished to reduce compression.

George is right on about the crank numbers to tell 429/460 but the cast numbers above the exhaust manifold next to the vc will at least tell you if you got one of them. If it still has the 77 heads the number should be D3VE-A2A or something close to that. If you find C8VE,C9VE,D0VE youve lucked out and got older higher compresion heads. If you find a D00E cast number just pull them off and send them to me there no good just kidding that is a cobra jet number. If I confused you just post the number you find and we can help. Thats a 1976 casting number. So the guy probably gave you the correct info on the engine. Being a 76 head its is most likely very likly you have a 460 not a 429. So when you need parts just get them for a 77 lincoln. If you intend to rebuild it or modify it 79 and newer 460s are externally balanced so the internal engine parts and flywheels cant be swapped. how do i know its a 460?
Here is a quick way to at least detemine if its a "385" series block: There are Seven (7) valve cover bolts!
FE's have 5 bolts
289/302/351W's have 6 bolts
351C/M, 400M have 8 bolts
