hey all, having a bit of a problem wiht my truck recently. Its an 83 with duraspark 2. It seems i have this tick that gets louder with engine load, not necessarily rpm. It sounds really sick and im afraid to rev it past 2500 rpm sometimes (mind you i dont have overdrive so 70 mph is 2500 rpm). Ive checked to make sure the fan blades werent smakcing the shroud, just to try the easiest possible solution. I think i need to get it timed, but i cant find the timing marks. Are they on the crank pulley?
Do i need to check for messed up valvetrain? vacuum leak?
I would pull the valve cover and make sure it doesn't have a loose rocker arm. If not, it could be a rod or main bearing, or a wrist pin. You didn't say how many miles are on the engine, but oil pickup could also be restricted.
the engine only has 95k miles. The previous owner didnt take very good care of it, but i do my best. These engines are supposed to be bomb proof so i figured 95k was perfectly fine.
i show 23 psi oil press with my mechanical gauge when its warm, about 45 cold, at idle.
when its warm im at 40 psi by 2000 rpm or so and the oil press doesnt increase very much past 2k.
i will check for a crappy rocker. I take it this is a flat tappet cam?
What Silver Streak said. A plugged Cat will increase pressure enough to blow out the donut where the exhaust pipe connects to the manifold or maybe even a manifold gasket and an '83 with 95k miles is most likely overdue for a new Cat.
Left to it's own, nothing is bomb proof...regular maintenance is required.
I just got donedoing exhaust on her. I removed the cat (my oh my.....) and the lame muffler and tip. Using the stock manifold and downpipe / flowtube stuff, i have a 2.5" dynomax super turbo with a short pipe after that. it exits just after the cab (waiting for more money and time to complete the side-exit stuff, as well as maybe efi manfiolds).
Also, i finally figured ou how to use my new timing gun. It was the first time i'd ever time a car but i think i got it right. I think i was running about 16* advance(!) before. I have it set to 8* now (the emissions sticker said 6* and i want to run regular gas, so i tried for 8-10*). It run alot smoother. The tick is 90% gone. I say 90% because my poor truck was abused before it got to me and the tick is now quiter than my doors smacking the cab over bumps! i will tear the valve cover off at some point (need to replace teh gasket anyway) and check for loose or otherwise crappy valvetrain.
You may need to back the timing off a hair more. The DS2 ignition has a rather wide advance curve to it, and exceeding the stock base timing can easily induce pinging, especially with the cheap grades of fuel. Older engines, that were not kept in top tune, can also have carbon build up inside, which increases the possibility of inducing this pinging. Pinging, left alone long enough, can cause serious engine damage such as cracked piston skirts, and it gets worse from there.
