Hey guys, I have a 2001 explorer with a 302 in it and it has 92000 miles on it. The other day I was listening to it run and herd this ''ticking'', I did not know what this could be? The speed of the ticking goes with the engine RPM's. At idle it ticks with the hum of the engine and if I rev it up it ticks faster. My friend listened to it and he said it might be an exhaust leak. But I fear the worst, a valve tap. To the cars credit the engine is not kicking or bucking it is running nice and smooth (except for the ticking), my oil pressure is right in the middle where it should be and I still get 16 miles to the gallon around town, I change the oil every 2500 miles non-synthetic and it is not throwing any codes. The only thing I could think of is my cheap father buys that valvoline crap and that is what it has in it now I have always put in ford motorcraft spec but not last oil change, same weight though. If any one has any ideas please tell me, this car has to last me until I get enough money for a new one (and that is not going to be for a long time seeing as how I pay cash). Thanks for your time, steve.
Probably a fussy valve lifter, not a real biggy. Sometimes they work themselves out of it on their own (few months) or you could add something to the oil like half a qt of ATF (yep) or Marvel Mystery oil or such.
I have used Rislone to clear up a ticking lifter. Cleared it up in minutes. Rislone is a ester based additive that safely dissolved varnish and other crud. Marvel Mystery oil is not, and if it works it loose, its more a matter of luck. Are you crazy adding ATF to the oil. Yes it has a lot of detergents, but it also contains friction modifiers and a whole bunch of other stuff that can't be good for the engine. Use a product designed for the crankcase. Alternatively, if you use synthetic oils (real synthetics, not the cheap knock off crap), they are ester based, so the oil itself is a detergent that dissolves varnish. So just using that kind of oil can clean the engine. One way to tell a true synthetic, is it has to advertise that it is good for at least 15,000 mile intervals.
The 302 in my '95 F-150 developed an exhaust leak in the egr tube that ran from the egr valve to the top of the intake manifold under the upper intake plenum. Could not see it and it sounded similar to a lifter tick. Your friend said it sounded like an exhaust leak and the sound would come from the top of the engine. MAy want to check that out. Just a suggestion.
you know ernie you could be on to something because I listened to it tonight and it did sound like it was coming from the top of the engine witch is why I thought it could be a lifter tick but I think I will try that tommorow. thanks
Does it make the ticking in park/ neutral? My wifes 97 limited explorer was ticking but only in gear, not in neutral. Couldnt believe it! its the belt tensioner pulley, cant explain it but the tensioner arm ticks when the motor is under load but silent when out of gear.
