These threads are never gonna end, and id at least get some people to tell me ive got a good idea (justify doing it...).
My 94 has a tow bumpr that has held up to immense punishment...stump pulling and pullin out my buddys 1 ton chubby chevy out, BUT... i would like to finally put on a hitch, and guess what? My duals are right in the way. Excuse for new exhaust !! Right now its got a catco cat, 3"in 2.5 dual out ravin muffler and 3.5" tips. Decent at idle but not deisel enough for me, gets kinda ricey, but not a whole lot. I want louder, and more like a straight piped 12valve cummins.
Ive got a few ideas just need a lil push in one direction or the other...i can leave the newer catco cat and run 2.5" or 3" single back. I could cut off the cat and run 3" single straightpipe all the way, or replace the cat with a flowmaster 40 and run single back. Any inputs on sound difference would be cool...not earsplitting, but straightpipe cummins is my goal...or close to. Oh yea and its got the efi split manifolds.
yes i know...another exhaust thread...but ive been excited to do this for the past week and think ive read every page on here....bout 30-40 worth. why the hell not, just post another lol.
A buddy of mine has true duals with his 6 but im not sure what kind of cats or mufflers but its quiet and if you listen it sounds like a mini semi. Im planning on cutting my 2nd cat out and running a single on mine with the stock size pipe but i have yet to pick out a muffler for mine.
i just put exaust on mine. it's the duel EFI manifold as well. i cut off the cat, ran it into a single 2.5" pipe then to a 30" cherry bomb and out the side. it sounds like a tractor more than anything, or a small 5.9, maby a bigger pipe might make it sound bigger but it is quiet inside and has a nice note outside. as a side note, the last 4.9 truck i had i did close to the same thing but put the cherry bomb in the stock muffler location, bad idea. although it sounded good outside, inside the cab it resonated to the point that it would give you a headach.
if i were you i would try running the cat in combo with a cherry bomb (i really like cherry bombs)

Yea the shop (has done lots of really good work for me) i go to reccommended i stick with a cat, cherry bomb, all 2.5" single. Im still not sure...i hear lots about single straightpipe, 2.5" and 3"...which is what i really wanted. But then again the guy also said the 3" would cackle (like when you go to small, its the same thing when u go to big???) what i was told.
yeah i want a low rumble at idel and sound like a v8 goin i hate the loud cackeling noise so im open to options because i dont have alot of money i wouldnt mind getna job to pay for it hah only 15 but i want my 4.9 to sound kinda like a v8 I KNOW IT WONT but i want it to and i was wondering the best way to have the look of dual exhaust and a good low tone rumble dnt mean to take ur post either snowman mine has the 2 cats then nothing it doesnt sound bad i just want more
I took my 2nd cat out and put on a cherrybomb turbo muffler in roughly the same location then ran the pipe out the side in front of the rear tire. Mine is an extended cab longbox so its still a lot of pipe. Its not very loud but has a little blurble at idle and has a rumble especially under load. Sounds really nifty when going downhill with my loaded trailer behind it.
can anyone tell me what the inlet/outlet diameter of the stock muffler is? id like to know because i plan on replacing it.
My '95 is 2.25" piping inlet and outlet. Stock muffler is very heavy and restricted to a 1.75" ID pipe hidden inside, which is about 33% restriction.
If you cut a hole in the back plate directly behind the inlet pipe you will effectively have made it into a cherry bomb (straight through). Then you can bolt or weld a flange to it and route a short pipe out the side. I ran mine that way for a few days and it sounded pretty loud and deep.

do you think that it would be the same inlet/outlet diameter would be the same for a '96?
rivet96: Any chance you could take five minutes and measure it your self?
fordguy300 and any one else with like questions: There is only one configuration that might with a slim chance of probability be determined as to what it will sound like...a six inch sewer pipe from manifold back has a chance of sounding like crap. But even that might be music to someone's ears. So try your configuration and if you don't like the sound, try something else. There is no way possible to adequately describe what your projected configuration will sound like and much less whether you will like it or not. It's all in the ear of the beholder.
