Unhappy Wellmann glowplugs

Installed new injectors and glowplugs about 6 months ago. Everything still works fine. I believed that I installed the motorcraft glowplugs. But no I have just checked at MWFI`s live helpdesk, and they told me that they are selling wellmann glowplugs. (I don`t think they should have numbered them FORZD9).
Should I replace them with some other brand? I understand there are some difficulties to get the motorcraft gp`s.

I've had Wellmans in my truck for abt. 3 yrs. now with no problems. I pulled a couple out last week to see how the tips looked and their like the day I installed them.

So maybe it is a good reason that MWFI has chosen to sell wellmann instead of many other brands. I feel (from reading a lot in this forum..) that MWFI has got a good reputation.

I got my glow plugs from MWFI as well, and frankly, they should not list the motocraft part number, dishonest.

I had the complete opposite experience with my wellmans. ANY glow plug can last for several years, even autolites, but the ford/motocraft/Beru plugs heat up more slowly, and seem to just have more material in them so when they do fail, they can be safely removed in tact.

The set of wellmans (PN# 080) that were in my truck burned out all at once from an accidental 15 second preheat (manual switch), upon inspection, half of the glow plugs did not have their tips on. They most likely were passed through the engine, but one piston had moderate damage (hence my rebuild).

I once tested a so called "dual coil" glow plug for a 6.9L diesel (PN# 088), the piece of **** swelled up to 1/4" before finally dying after a mere 22 seconds, by 9 seconds, it was already starting to distort. There are still several online sources for motocraft glow plugs out there, and I would never advise anyone to use wellmans after my experience. BERU glow plugs are are a lot cheaper than having to pull the heads to inspect for piston damage IMHO.

When I bought my wellmans you had to buy direct--they had no distributors. A quick search showed they went chapter 7 [liquidation] a few years back so who knows who's running the show know ?

That makes me wonder, because all the research I did at the time of recieving my "not berus" told me that they were a reputable product (major supplier of US military), who knows, but I won't take the chance again without testing the product first.

When I ordered my GPs from MWFI, I ordered 9 to have one for a test, but the 8th one ended up being a BERU!! so I took the chance......

I've been running wellmans in my heap for 3 years, hadn't had an issue until recently when I left my truck at a friends place(picked up the 90) and they, while quite intoxicated, decided they had to move it, truck wasn't plugged in, had 15W40 in it still, it was -30, and the starter isn't so hot... I came back to find a dead battery, only 3 glows left, and all I could smell when I opened the hood was ether... Needless to say I'll never leave anything there with keys in it again.... That said, all the ones that failed did not swell, and came out of the heads just fine.

Doing a further search on Wellman the only complaints I found abt. their glow plugs were traced back to other problems that caused the failure.
Wellman or WAP is still American owned by Shares inc., the company that originally did their testing and packaging.

Thats the danger, I ran wellmans with no problem, but all it took was one case of a long glow to swell them up. I had a faulty controller before, and it would turn on, and not turn off untill all the glow blugs burned up, berus surived, but wellmans were a 50/50 chance of coming out safely.

Under normal conditions, sure they will probably work, but all it takes is one bad situation to make a mess of things, berus simply have a slightly better safety net. For running them in a newer style electronic GP controller it might be a big enough safety net.
