about a year ago, before the truck was actually mine, my father had someone install new glowplugs in the truck. reacently i had been having trouble getting it started. i had looked that the glowplugs to see if maybe they were bad but usualy it was after i had driven it, so it was pretty hot, or was to dark. yesterday i decided i was going to check them before i got the truck started, because i was really having problems with getting it started. turns out that one of the glowplugs had the little flat piece of metal broken off of the top of it. apon farther inspection the glowplug was not even screwed into the hole, but rather just sitting with the threads on the edge of the hole. the glowplug was rusted a bit also
heres my few questions about this:
since the glow plug was rusted, that means there was water that was on it, which means that water could have gotten in the engine(i think... correct me if im wrong). How can i tell if there is any damage to the engine, or does anyone know if just the little bit that did get in would have done much damage.
is it weird that i was even able to get it started without a working glowplug at all?
get a compression check done, this will tell you the true condition of the cylinder in question. I would bet that not that much water actually got into her, so I would not worry about that much. But I would still get the compression check done, this way you really know what's going on.
I agree with argve, that much water couldn't have gotten in there. The plug had a rusty appearance because it's been sitting in there dead. I would change the plug, put the connector on, and see how it starts. Make sure all the connectors are in good shape.
How long does the 'wait to start' light stay on? As glow plugs begin to drop out, they make the whole system stay on for shorter amounts of time, that'll give you those hard starts.
