The dash lights aren't that bad. It was one of the first things I had to do on our 98 Expedition.
As others have said, the biggest challenge is getting the gauge unit out. To change the bulbs, you don't need to have it all the way out, only far enough to get to the back.
A suggestion I would have is to take some low tack masking tape and tape across the front of the gauge unit prior to taking it out of the truck. I did not do this and ended up with a minor scrape on the face at some point.
