Angry 98expy...replacing dash lights

'98 expy. I've spent the last 2 hours looking for info on this. I have alot of bulbs that I assume are blown in my dash... behind the fuel and oil gauges, tach. Also the bulbs behind the temp controls are not working. Has anyone pulled the dash apart to replace these bulbs? Any dos or don'ts when pulling the dash out/apart? Is this somewhat easy to tackle? I've replaced the bulbs on my '83 f150 and '87 bronco, those were pretty ez, just a little time consuming.

Its pretty simple, I just saw a thread the other day with a full end to end captioned pictorial on how to do it. I've looked but cant find it now, the only trick I saw was pulling the headlight switch off, flipping it, putting it back on and turning clock wise until the whole switch unit pops out. To get the column cover off just reach around the sterring wheel, grab the plastic and pull straight back (it should just pop off and slide out). Other than that it was around 7 screws and a couple wiring connectors. Sorry I cant find the thread for ya, I was on another computer and dont have it in the browser history.

I took my Gauges out about a year or so ago. After trying for 30 minutes to remove the lights bulb. With no luck I put everything back I couldn’t get the bulb out so I left it alone before breaking it. I have to try again maybe when it gets warmer outside.
Later… Al

Very cool thanks guys, I thought I remembered seeing a thread in here several months ago also. I can't find the one I was looking for either. I'll just have to dive into it, really don't want this to turn into a Huge Headache or a Mistake once I get in there...... I'll have to wait till the weekend for it to warm up here as well.

al52269, There were a couple steps in that tutorial where he did something special to get the bulbs out. I want to say there was flap of metal or something he had to bend or twist before he could get the bulbs out, and he stated you had to turn very hard.

Anyone have a link to the tutorial? I did this in my '98 Explorer with no clue and a screwdriver , but the Expy seems more involved.

Ive done it before on the 98 expedition, i remember it being a real pain, and the hardest part (don't remember how i did it) is to remove the switch for the headlights and get to the screws in there. I think you start with the bezel around the stereo/heater unit and work towards the steering wheel. then keep taking off panels until you have access to what you need. (i.e. panels to reach screws to take off other panels)

You'll find it uses five #194 bulbs, if you're going to replace one you might as well do them all so you don't have to do it again later.

That is exactly what I needed.

Others in this thread have alluded to difficulty actually removing the bulbs? Bending metal to remove a bulb???

Since you know the bulb number, I'm guessing you know how to replace the bulbs. Is there something I should know?

Thanks in advance!

The plastic retainers holding the bulbs in the console need to be turned counter clock wise about a 1/4 turn. I used a pair of pliers to turn them with. It takes a supprising amout of force to turn them (more than one would think and more than I could do by hand) but they will turn. Then just pull them stright out and unplug the bulb and replace with a new one then install in reverse order. I need to point out that the ones I replaced were on a 97 but I'm pretty sure the 98's the same.

My Expy is a '97 as well.

I believe changing the bulbs on my '98 Explorer were just as you describe, so I think it'll be easy enough now that I know how to pull the dashboard apart.

Thanks!

I will also try to change the light bulbs in my dash this weakened.
I hope I don’t break anything.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
