00' instrument cluster bulbs

I'm taking my dashboard apart for another project, and figure I may as well take the instrument cluster out and replace some bulbs while I'm at it. Which leaves me with a few questions:

1. What size/type bulbs go in the dash cluster?

2. Should I just replace all of them while I've got it apart?

3. How many bulbs are there in my he dash cluster?

Thanks.

Yes, you'll just have to do it later.

Don't remember, sorry. Did it three years ago.

The instrument panel is like my 1997 F150's. When I replaced the bulbs in mine it took about 24 bulbs by using 2 per pack from Advance Auto.

Get led 194 bulbs. Spend a little extra and get good ones and they should outlast the truck and you'll like the brighter dials

I literally just did this on my 2000 Ex two days ago. It takes five #194 bulbs for all of the "illumination" bulbs, and anywhere from 14-17 #74 bulbs for all of the "warning" bulbs depending in your trucks drive train and features. I'd go ahead and change out all of them while you're in there, like I did. 10 packs of Sullivan bulbs can be bought of each pretty cheaply at O'AdvancedZone. I personally just went with the regular halogen bulbs because (1) they're cheap and easily available, (2) anything else will probably outlive the truck, and (3) that would be a whole lot of LED's and probably quite bright.

What if you want dimmer bulbs? Especially for the "brights" bulb.

Then get a colored led like blue or something even darker. Or leave that bulb out.

It's still gonna show blue because their is a film inside the cluster that makes it blue. Youre just looking to make it not so bright by using a colored bulb

Perfect, thank you. If there are 5 bulbs for illumination, 2-3 of mine are out. And the only other thing is that the indicator light for my parking brake doesn't come on when setting the brake. I'll try a bulb first, see if that fixes the issue.

No problem! I only had 1 of the 5 illumination bulbs still working, so it did wonders for my dash! Luckily all of my warning bulbs were still working, but I still went ahead and replaced all of them while in there as well, and I think they're even a little bit brighter now with the new ones.

So, new dilemma.

I took the instrument cluster apart to change the illumination bulbs, and to investigate why the parking brake indicator doesn't work. As it turns out, there is no light mounted in the parking brake spot. Looks like there never was. Could Ford have forgotten it? So I not only need a bulb, I need a base to go with it!

Anyway, I stopped at my local dealer. Don't have it, Ford doesn't support it, can't get it.

Any ideas?

Scrapyard. Or try and order it for an F250.

It's highly unlikely that Ford forgot it, as it's a safety feature... Not only does it show that the parking brake is set, but also that the brake fluid is low.

Try digging around behind the dashboard.

IIRC from when looking at mine and in the factory shop manual, there was actually two different possible locations in the cluster for that brake warning bulb, which varied depending on your model for some reason. I know mine only had a bulb in one of them. I'll check my manual again when I get home, but I'm pretty sure that was the one warning light that had two possible locations it could've gone in the cluster. Check yours again to see if it's somewhere else.

Another idea, does your cluster have bulbs in any other sockets that aren't used on your truck? Mine is a 2WD, but it still had a bulb in the 4x4 and Hi/Lo sockets, which obviously are never used. If so, remove it and swap it over to where you want it, since it's not needed anyways.

Actually, I pulled the bulb from the 'seatbelt' indicator (I always wear mine anyway; don't need a reminder), and plugged it into the 'brake' socket, and nothing happened. I don't see any other place labeled as 'brake'.
