Can you be more specific, what doesn't work? What sensor is it if you know, and can you give a more detailed description of where the sensor is?

How long has the gauge been inop and was it a factory or aftermarket sensor replacement?

Yes, the temperature sender that screws into the top of the water pump near the thermostat housing (upper radiator hose outlet) is for the temperature gauge.

My truck's temp gauge didn't work when I bought it. Made the dealer fix it, but the service report said "replaced sender & thermostat". I bought the truck in January, and it took forever to get heat. If you have that problem, you might check the 'stat, too. If it's stuck open, the large cooling system will keep the engine from warming up much (especially in winter!).

Today it was about 23* when I left the house. Now, my truck is garage kept, but I still let it sit in the driveway for about 5-10 mins to warm up. EBPV closed, and by the time I got in and started on the way, I already had some heat.
