Make sure you have the correct oil pan.I don't remember there being that large of a gap in the rear.I put an even bead of RTV (about 1/2") around the entire pan and have had no problems.
Thanks. I am pretty sure it is the right one. I did get it from ford and it did say 7.3L on the label. We even went as far as putting a bead on the pan and a bead on the engine. I installed the pan to about half the spec torque. I let it cure for a half our or so and then did the final torque. Sorry to here about the tranny. I have the 6 speed.
Yea,wish mine was a stick. I actually bought a 2006 Dodge,Cummins,std cab,2wd,stick with 6.5k miles to add to the "fleet" because I couldn't find a low mile 7.3 stick and I won't consider a 6.0.
I just don't trust the 4r100 in my '01 F250 for towing after all the trouble I have had with my F550's auto tranny, although my 2000 F350's 4r100 is going strong on 182k miles, many of them plowing snow, so go figure.
I would allow the RTV to set up at least 24hrs at a minimum of 60 degrees before filling with oil.I know the tube says you can use it right away, but due to the gaps on the oil pan,I give it an overnight cure. It HAS to be warm enough for the RTV to cure,as rtv stands for room temperature vulcanizing, and they don't mean 20 degrees!Make sure you torque it at least to spec as well. You do not want it coming loose.

Thanks for the reply. We keep the shop at 60 so that shouldn't be a problem. It will be about 2 weeks before I can do it but I will let ou know how it turned out. Thanks Again!
You said you use "Ultra Black"? I would Use the grey RTV from the dealer (TA-29). It is the strongest RTV out there and is what they use from the factory.
Tried that junk. Never cured. I trust the Ultra black. I have been a mechanic on marine engines for several years now and that is all I use. Any place that was exposed to air skinned over but the centered never cured after 2 days. So much for having a very short window to install it.
