I have an 87 f-150 300 I6 EFI.
my truck is without a muffler just the cayt converter. My question is, is my truck getting enough backpressure from the lack of a muffler to be operating the way it should. if so what kind of mufflers would one suggest for best performance and a fairly quite ride (its real loud at the moment)
and what are some things I can do to help the engine breathe better.
I drove mine for a day with no muffler & it was very loud . Im sure it would run better with , at least quieter, with a muffler .Im going to replace mine soon with a Gibson . They run about the same price as the Ford muffler .
trvaughn: Do you feel that the performance is poorer (particularly at low RPMs,say 1000 to 1500) since you took out the muffler? Does the pipe end after the cat or did you put in a straight pipe to route through the tailpipe?
I really don't know if there is a difference. The muffler was off when I baught the truck.
COncerning the Cat the pile ends a couple of inches past the cat.
If your truck is running pretty good now, you probably want to add as little additional restriction as possible. You are in a good situation to go with a cat-back system as discussed in two other posts below ("gibson exhaust" and I think "backpressure on a 300 I 6").
