new bed or flatbed?

I would like to replace the bed on my 84 f250, as the one that is on it now has very rusty wheel arches and numerous holes. It is 8ft, has 2 tanks and is SRW. I dont know if I should find a fairly rust-free bed or either build or buy a flatbed. I usually carry loose stuff, which is why sides would be nice. What would be my cheaper route? Also, wats a good price for a rust free bed? I found one for $500 with 2 fillers and no rust.

flatbed all the way, you can buy them with sides that either fold up to be useful or down when not needed. i am doing the samething on my 83 f250 with srw and dual tanks 8 ft. i find flatbeds in the trader for 500 all the time. or if you want another project build one yourself to your own specs.

$500 is a good price for a rust free bed. Be warned though, it will rust eventually.

Flat beds are nice for some things, suck for other things, it is all in what you want out of it. I carry too much stuff to be happy with just a flatbed, I would have to put on some boxes as well... When I haul scrap though, flatbeds are nice, so there again, it is in what you want.

I like my flatbed, though I'd like a dually bed (I like the hips of a bed). $500 is a nice price. If you do get the bed, get the underside coated to stop the rust for a while, yes it will rust eventually, but coating it will make it last longer.

And SRW's with a flatbed just don't look as good as DRW's IMHO.

500 is a great price for a rust free bed. I personnally dont really like the looks of a truck thats not dually with a flatbed but to each his own.

IMO get the bed, looks a whole lot better and a flatbed will rust eventually as well, unless the frame is all wood then it will just rot.

LMC has nice arch repair panels that are very inexpensive if you want to go that route.

I looked at patch panels, but the bed is too far gone for patches. Im probably going the regular bed route, so Ill keep ya posted and will post pics once my new bed is installed!

Also, does the bed require any special hardware to install? Are the bolts normal carriage bolts?

Yes they are carriage bolts. Unless the holes are rounded/rusty like my old '89, then I used a normal bolt with a big waher to distribute the force.

Question

Do you have to have mud flaps on a flatbed by law?
