stalling

My son's 89 F150 with 4.9 starts then runs for a while then shuts down. The fuel pump quits running. Inline pump replaced and it ran for a longer period before shutdown. Starts up when the pump will come back on. Any Idfeas? Please email me : pgood52636(No Email Addresses In Posts!) or give any hints here.
Thanks Paul Goodman

Check the fuel pump relay & its wiring . Its located in the left engine bay , mounted in a long black block next to the air cleaner .

Emailing kind of defeats the purpose of the message board . Someone else may have a similar problem that could benefit from the post w/o actually having to go over redundant symptoms . Throwing parts at it & guessing is only a waste of your time & money . When the engine quits first check for spark & then the fuel pressure . Depending on what is not working will narrow down your search for the actual cause of the problem .

By now power at the pump you mean you put a voltmeter on it and it goes to zero? If you turn off the ignition switch and turn it back on does power return? To my knowlege there isn't any sensor which would actually turn off power to the fuel pump.

When this happens, is there voltage to the red wire on the fuel pump relay? If so, then you've probably just found the problem.

I would seriously check the wiring to that relay. The contacts on that connector are made of crap and can corrode easily (like mine did). give each wire a firm tug and twist and see if one breaks loose. I bought a new connector (and just to be safe, another relay) at my local Ford dealership (Tasca) for 12 bucks.
