That really isn't the way to do it as it screws with the oxygen sensor readings. Sure it will run but not to full capacity. Heres an example:
The computer detects that cylinder 4 is running rich so it tries to adjust the fuel output for cylinder 4 just the injector it thinks is for number 4 is now actually number 7. So cylinder 7 is getting less fuel and cylinder 4 is still rich. See the problem?
I have a friend that rebuilt a 302 for his Crown Vic and in the process he got the oxygen sensor harness mixed up so the right is now the left etc. It still ran fine but one side of the engine was running rich and the other side was lean. We fixed the harness and that engine so much smoother.
The best way is to edit the computer so it knows the correct order plus you can tune it's settings to your engine configuration, like telling it's a 289 instead of a 302.
