Someone just gave me a low rise four barrel intake for my 1971 360. I have the stock two barrel intake with the stock carb on the truck now. I have a carter 600 that I am not useing. Will it be worth the effort to switch over to the four barrel? Is the low rise a good intake to have? Is the 600 cfm going to be to much?
I put one on my 390, I noticed little to no difference in power. Then the Holly carb which I got off a 390 gave me so much trouble in the winter I just put an adapter plate on the 4V intake and put the 2 barrel back on. Haven't had any problems since. I do have dual exhaust, but no headers or Cam, maybe these things would make a difference. Now, I have an 4V edlebrock intake and carb on my 400, and I can defineatley tell the difference on that. I'm not against the 4V on the 390, in fact, I plan to build one up for my 66 galaxie, but as for my truck, I could take it or leave it.
Yea, I'd go for it. I have a 4bl on my 66 truck, cast manafoid. and headers, works great. Did the same on my sons 66 2wd with automatic, no headers yet, but working good. I us the Elderbrock 600cfm on mine, my son uses the Holly, I like the Elderbrock better.
I think the carb you've got will work fine. The important thing is to rebuild it, and make sure you learn every thing there is to know about it, so that you can optimally tune it for your motor. Usually when people (no one on here of course ) prefer one carburetor to another it is because they dont know how to properly tune and / or work on the other one.
Myself, I prefer Holleys, because that's what I know.

Agreed. I got a rebuilt Holley 600 vacum secondary for my birthday back in december. I could not get it too stop stumbing, I thouhgt it was a holley flaw. But then I contacetd the carb rebuilder and he told me to adjust the accerlator pump nut, I did so and now the carb is PERFECT. Great carb no problems. Some people say " the holleys never work right and are a pain to adjust so I got an edelbrock" I guess some folks dont realize you have to tune the carb to the motor, the carb I got fro the dude was tuned for a chevy 350 and ran like crap on my Ford 352, even though its the same size motor it had to be tuned very differently for my Ford. Point is learn about the carb and tune it and itll solve your problems.
