Hello! I am the proud new owner of a 1984 F150 with a 300 6 and a 3 speed on-the-tree. It has approximately 58000 miles on it and is in fairly good condition. I have two questions: 1. What is the Horse power and torque ratings for this engine? 2. It idles incosistently, meaning it will be smooth for a while then acts like it is missing (warm or cold). It also misses at highway speeds, intermittently. I have found and repaired one vacuum leak. I still want to install new plugs and wires. Any help with these questions would be great! Thanks!
The first thing you want to do is a complete tune-up. Go ahead and replace plugs, wires, dist cap, rotor, air cleaner, fuel filter and so on. Sounds like it needs to be done anyway. Another easy step is to replace all vacuum lines regardless. That way you have a good clean baseline to start with if the problem persists. Not a bad idea to change the oil also - that way you can get onto a schedule right away.
Good luck - let us know how it goes.
the advice to check for vacuum leaks is right on the money. also, the spark plug wires will help if they are old.
the egr valve is another source of this problem, especially when the problem is intermittent . make sure it is operating smoothly by pushing on it to check for binding.
Thanks for the inputs. Due to money constraints, working on my truck has taken a back seat! I have replaced the plugs (side gapped them) and today I replaced the fuel filter going into the carb. Seems much smoother, but I can still feel the miss. From all the past threads, I have a good idea what still needs to be done. Wires, cap and rotor are next. I want to just unplug the EGR valve and run it down the road. I'm leaning toward that as the bad guy. My cats could also be plugged. (Any way to tell this?) I'll write back in if and when I get her smoothed out. Thanks for the help.

I can tell you it definitely smoothed out, the rough idle & hesitation are gone. And I just replaced the stupid thing a little over a year ago. Along with the sensor on top of it, and the solenoid.
