Hey guys. As you can tell i'm new here. I have a 68 ranger longbed black with red interior. Will a frame from a 72 interchange with 68? I've noticed the rear shock mounts are different. is there anything else. Thanks guys.
The 2wd chassis are basically the same from 65 to 72. 4in was added to the length behind the cab mounts in 73 and used until 79. The design change in 80 was kept until 97 when the current was introduced. Their are minor changes along the way but body mounts or axle bolt up locations are the same for those series.

Welcome to FTE
You failed to mention whether you have an F100, F250 or F350.
2WD: The 1968/72 F100 frames are virtually the same. The 68/72 F250 frames are the same, but different than the F100 frame. The 68/72 F350 frames are the same but are different than the ones the F250's use.
4WD frames are different again for F100 & F250's (no F350 4WD's till 1979).
1968/72 F100/250's came with two different styles of rear springs.
When Flex-O-Matic rear springs are present, the shock mounts are in a different location. Most F100's didn't have this setup, it was seen mostly on F250's.
What F Series truck do you have?

It is a 68 f100 ranger long bed. It came 360 3 on the tree black with red interior. I've had the truck about eight years. First change was a 390 and it ran real well but I wanted more. Second change was a disc brake nine inch, I used the front suspension of a lincoln and subframed it. 390 with edelbrock heads, intake and all the other goodies I could find with a toploader four speed. I am starting change number 3. The truck drove great and handled good but the front end was just too bulky. I bought a frame out of a 71 or 72. It is getting a 31 spline drum brake nine inch this time, mustang 2 front, a overdrive five speed but I havent decided on the engine yet.

Bill He can still swap the sheetmetal on all of the above.
I've noticed a few little things. The upper rear shock mounts are different. and the 72 didn't have a bracket for the E brake like the 68 had. Do you guys know of anything else different between the two frames? Another question both of them have the Flex o matic springs. Should I keep them or just use normal spring shackles? As you can tell it is no longer a truck but more of a hot rod. Thanks

Yes, I know that...but it's also nice to know what he's working on.
One can swap 1957/72 F100/250 2WD springs (both are the same length & width, it just depends on how many leafs you want), but the Flex-O's use different shackle brackets besides shock absorber brackets.
It's a personal choice whether one wants to keep the Flex-O's or not.
btw: 1973/79 9" rear axles are wider, and the rear springs are wider and longer.
I assume you've verified the 9 inch you are using has 31 spline axle shafts.

The nine inch that im planning on using is on from the oddball early 80s f100s. They are 31 spline with 4 1/2 bolt pattern. I know they are wide but I may cut the driver side down and move the pinion towards center line.

1980/83 F100's: Ford advertised them as a LIGHT TRUCK, and these F100's have "Swiss Cheese" frames, 4.50 wheels, 10" rear brakes, smaller front brakes, different shocks/springs and other front/rear suspension bits. All a this is different than 1980/83 F150's used.
ALL the 1980/83 F100's have 31 splined axle shafts: = E0TZ-4234-H .. Right / E0TZ-4234-J .. Left
Yep that is the one I have. I'm using it because is it a car bolt pattern and 31 spline. The spring pads and shock mounts dont bother me considering they already fell off on the floor. You got to love a plasma cutter!
