Hey guys, I cracked the frame on my 96 f150 with 4" skyjacker lift. I was going to weld it but thought I would get some ideas before I destroy it in the garage. I just put new tires on it and it started shaking violently at 68 mpg. Bad enough to throw the weights of both tires. The crack is about 2' long and 1/8" wide right were the oil drains when you loosen the filter on the backside of the engine crossmember. You can see it good from under the drivers side of the cab. Another post here said a guy took one to KC Freightliner for a frame crack. Any help would be greatly appreiciated. A name for the guy at kc freightliner would be good too.
my 88 is cracked at the radius arm bracket-a buddy welded it and I finally parked it -was getting too scary -the whole frame was getting body metal thin-
If you were in NJ id say go to a guy by my house. He welded up my buddys GMC frame and then gave him 2 peices of metal to sandwich the crack. Pics would help determine your best bet.
I would recommed calling your local inspection stations, in NY welded frames have become uninspectable. So before you drop the time and money to get it fixed see if your state will allow you to run with a repaired frame.
I would be comfortable with a repair job as mention above, the weld and sandwich, then weld the edges of the sandwhich on frames overkill is better. Remember too whenever heating a frame you need to keep it in certain tolerances or you could make it brittle and it could make the problem worse.
Hey guys, Im new to the site and have been searching forums for some info. Is this bracket the same as what i've found as a axle pivot bracket and a radius bracket? I have a similar problem on my f250 where the bracket meets the frame. It has been unnoticed till I sheared of a bolt from the bottom of the bracket and my tires went /\. Tough taking that bracket off?

Thanks I just got back from my buddys place too(welder). I have a 6" lift bracket that cracked, where it mounts to the frame. hes gonna weld a plate on it with some gussets. I know what you mean about frame getting weak. I've also got a crack in the frame at the steering box. Im hoping to fix that too. I put this Ford through alot but he keeps going. It would be pretty hard to put her down. Got 270k miles on him now and people say im just breaking it in.
I've heard that these types of cracks are common place. I bought an '89 F-150 recently as a mud truck...nothing more. The frame at the steering box is cracked...it looked like the previous owner had hit something hard with the front end and a couple rivets came off the power steering bracket and caused the frame to start to split. It has a 6" lift with 35X14.5 TSL's, which definitely compounded the situation. In a couple weeks here I'm going to be drilling the crack, then getting my buddy (welder) to run some beeds up it, and then fish plate it. Should be stronger then ever after that.
I've never heard of the frames cracking at the radius arm bracket locations though...
