I have only 84K on my 2000 Expy. Over the past year it has started idling rough, and the gas millage has dropped from 12mpg to 10.5mpg (driving habits and routes have not changed). I am getting no fault codes and I have done no major work to the truck, ever! This is a minor annoyance, what would be a few things I should look into???
how's the maintenance been? i'd start with checking and changing the fluids (if it hasn't been done recently) and just check all the tune-up type stuff to begin with (fuel/air filters...etc).
your rough idle could be a problem with your IAC valve - cleaning it may help.
What is your average trip length/time? If short, you could be in need of some new O2 sensors. The only way to be sure is to see them in action and make sure they are 'switching' as designed.
In your case, I would start with new plugs/wires. If you still have the problem, then you are looking at a bad coil (Ford calls it a coil pack).
Mines is doing the same thing. In my situation it gave me a
Code P0303 Code - Cylinder #3 Misfire.
When I get a chance, I will change my plug/wire and go from there…

Most of my trips are short. I will start will cleaning the IAC and if that dosn't fix it I will go for the O2 sensor.
I don't agree with the replies to change the fluids, I do that as part of normal preventative maintenance. In no way will they cause an engine to run bad, unless you NEVER change them.
Anyway, thanks for the all advice, I think I am off to a good start.

I am having the same fuel problem, but my idle is good. Showing no codes. The only thing that I have changed that may be the cause in my case is I replaced a flowmaster with an inexpensive non-stock muffler. I suspect this is the cause and am checking the forum for help. I went from 15-16 city to 12-13 mph. I do not drive hard and am meticulous about maintenance. Maintenance current. Plugs (Motorcraft) and boots changed at 70000 and mileage was good before and after. Any help is appreciated.
Info: 81000 miles, EB, 5.4L
motor oil: Mobile 1 change every 5000.
Oil Filter: Motorcraft
K&N air filter, Cleaned and lubricated April 07
coolant flush at 75000
Fram fuel filter changed max every 10000
I had that issue when I started to do just city driving. Check the air filter. Just change out one in a 91 Explorer and the owner noticed the difference almost instantly. As for my 97 Exped, with 204K, I drove from Philly to Yorktown, Va. Stayed for a few days and drove back to Philly. 12 hours later, I drove to Providence, RI, stayed for some more days. Drove back to Philly! After all that driving, my ride was back to it's normal self. Bottom line, check air filter and go on a long highway drive.
