MPG Indicator gone haywire?

Asked my local service adviser this question when I had the truck in a few days ago and he just went

Why is it that the MPG part of the dashboard computer only will give me MPG from day 1 ? (total mileage)

When I toggle through the trip (A&B), Miles to Empty, MPG, etc., the MPG shows 12.9MPG for the TOTAL mileage on the truck 68xx, NOT the current fuel consumption for either trip A or B. As in ........ 12.9MPG
68xx

Am I missing something here?

What good is knowing the overall MPG. I want to know what my current tank of fuel is getting.

Service guy says he has no idea why it is doing that (actually said "maybe the dash panel is bad")

Is there a way to show current MPG?

Anyone else have this issue?

I guess I'll ask did you hold the select button down to try and reset it to 0? If that doesn't work then there is indeed a problem. You should be able to reset it whenever you want but you cant have it show the mileage for two different trips. It just calculates from whenever it was last reset.

I can reset the MPG to Zero, but it still reads the total mileage underneath the MPG. I reset the trips to Zero and it makes no difference. Even if it is reading a trip MPG, it isn't telling me which one and how many miles.

The total mileage on the truck is the total mileage on the truck. The MPG calculator has nothing to do with that. Your MPG calculator calculates the variance between how much fuel goes in to the engine and how many miles were driven. The time base of this period is the last time the RESET button was pushed.

I reset my trip B and my MPG after each fill up. The MPG calculator, thus, calculates the fuel mileage each fill up. I hand calculate also just to see if it varies much (mine doesn't vary too much, its only off a few tenths at most, most of the time it is only a tenth off).

The screen that shows the mileage and MPG is just that. Each one is independent, there isn't any correlation unless the MPG was never reset since the truck was driven off the line. There is no way to show tank average and trip average. If you use trip A for your trip total miles and trip B for your tank miles you can only use one to calculate fuel mileage. The way you do it is hit the reset button while on the MPG screen before you start one of the two periods, and NEVER hit reset again for the rest of the period (trip or tank).

Steve,

That was an excellent explanation. It sure would be nice if they would give us an A/B for the MPG.

I understand what you are saying, but it makes no sense. Why would the same screen show MPG and Total Mileage? If I want to see total mileage, I just look at the odometer on the 1st screen.

There absolutely has to be a correlation between the MPG and the mileage number shown on the same screen. Why else would it be there?

You should be able to hit reset in the MPG screen and it should reset the MPG to zero and reset the mileage shown on the same screen to zero. Trip length (A or B) should have nothing to do with it.

You are performing 2 or 3 steps your way and not just the 1 step it should be.

If that really is the way it works, someone at Ford has some explaining to do.

I believe it is legally required to always show the total mileage.

You can show:

Odo Only
Trip A + Odo
Trip B + Odo
MPG + Odo
MTE + Odo

why would that be?

I find it hard to believe that the MPG screen is just that. What good does it do if you have to reset 2 different screens just to see what the MPG is?

I will be calling Ford on Monday to see if I can get an explanation of why this is set up in such a manner.

Anyone want a bet it takes me talking to 10 different Ford employees to find out?

Evidently that is not the case. I always run until I am on fumes and then fill up. When I get to "Low fuel level, XX miles to E" the mileage does not show.

You let us all know how that 'talk' with Ford goes. It is what it is, accept it and move on. Gives you MPG from the last time you reset to zero and that's it.

Hey, my last truck never gave me this many options. All I had was total miles and 1 trip miles that I could reset. I'm happy with it. Once I learned how to navigate the screen it wasn't too bad.

There isn't anything wrong with your system. If you can't accept the functionality get rid of the truck and get a Lexus. Maybe that does what you want? They even show instantaneous mileage, in addition to an average (based on whenever you reset it). Now thats slick

This is not correct.

At work we have a Pontiac, a Chevy, and a Dodge that do not always show the odometer. On each of them you have to scroll through different screens to get the odometer, which is a real PITA when you need the odo reading frequently.

I think it's a Ford standard to always have that information available.

I thought they odo still showed under the low fuel indication... i know it will come back if you press the button once. I generally run with my dash lights as dim as I can get them, and the low fuel indication comes up brighter, so I "acknowledge" the warning... same with the TPMS warning, too.

now that I think about it, my '02 Silverado would show EITHER trip or total, not both.
