Ya i am gonna definatly put a few bucks into it. nathan i will take any tips you have when i start working on the engine to. also would be interested in some performance parts for the shortbox!
I did those last two posts on ehre from my cell phone when i was really bored!
Yeah the truck to me is worth keeping, but I just dont want to blow a bunch just on the motor. I was hard on it, but it still runs great, just needs a little refreshing. Shes along ways till the grave, but I would like to prolong it as much as I can too!
I was thinking about yanking the engine out, just doing the heads, new gaskets through the whole thing, maybe a set of rings. Something that wouldnt require too too much extra shop machine work.
Now I also would like to put some cash and time aside in the spring when I go get whatever ford I get from my uncle.
No use doing the top end of your motor and blowing out the bottom end. Bite the bullet once and do it all rather than a short term patch job if you plan on keeping this truck.
If anything you skimp on the top end. I'm doing this to a certain extent. My short block is going to be blueprinted and future upgrades to Edelbrock heads as my stock heads are limiting output. I'll be more than happy with over 300 hp and anyways I would have to upgrade my entire top end to do more than 350 hp. I would need a bigger intake, injectors, mass air sensor and fuel pump.
In this graph you can pretty much see that my engine hits a wall with the stock heads.
I'm gonna say just do the top end. You don't have to **** around with break in period. And lets say you get it all rebuilt and bam you spin a main bearing. Then the block is as screwed as a pistion going through. If you don't do the bottom end then the motor doesn't have to come out, no buggin around with mounting, lining then you gotta mess with all guages, tranny drive line.
Once again like stated before what are you really gonna use this truck for, You got the power stroke and the civic for long distance/ hauling then if you are still planning on doing a 460 up in a classic truck its not like this 89 is gonna be used in "fun" cruises.
Do a top end build get all your power back and it'll still last as a weekend warrior for many years to come once the motor leaves the mounts it is a whole other long expensive story.

If you only redo the top end, don`t do the bottom end most likely the motor will will be coming out very shortly after......
The chioce is your`s, save a little now and spend alot more later or get it done right the first time.
Remeber that if your going with a 460 later the rebuilt 302 engine can be sold for a good chunk of the cost back.
i rebuilt the top end on my dirt bike last winter...pretty sure when i traded it i was starting to hear some weird sounds from the bottom end but i'm not sure. when i do my '83/351w i'm going to check all the clearances, compression and all that jazz. no point in building the sucker to self destruct. i was supprised when looking that the parts aren't all that expensive.
Ya ryan the truck is just going to be used as a spare not even a weekend warrior which is why i dont want to spend alot on it. i sure hate to do things half assed though!
