300 exhaust

What is the best exhaust set up for the 300. I will be using a clifford split manifold header. I don't want the truck to sound like an airplane but still want it to be fairly loud and as throaty as a six-banger can get. Is it best to run duals off of each collector on the header? Or is it better to run them together in a single system? Or am I better off with a single-outlet header? And what muffler sounds the best with this engine? Should I go with glasspacks? Or a performance muffler from Gibson or Flowmaster ect..?

Are you adding a cam? aftermarket intake? What are you going to do with the truck? Race/off road/daily driver? How loud do you want to go? And last but not least - how much do you want to spend?

I run dual cast iron manifolds into a single 2.5 in pipe with a cheap low restriction muffler. I have a clifford intake with a 350 cfm 2 barrel. Has good sound and flows fine. Ran a 450 cfm 4 barrel (going back on in 2 mos) and it also flowed fine. Was a touch louder though.

If you are adding a cam, doing head work and racing then I might tend towards running duals with a crossover. The consensus I get from people posting says the flowmaster is the most popular - you might do a search to see if that is so. I could not justify the expense since my beast does not see anything over 3500 very often.

For a daily driver seeing less than 4000 rpm than I do not think a dual gains you anything other than its maybe louder and lightens you wallet more. There are several threads with what people are running - running a search (if you have not done so) will give you more opinions.

Hope this helps -

I will be adding a 4bbl. intake, split headers, camshaft and some minor headwork (0.060" shave, maybe bigger valves). Should I still stick with single or should I go to duals. I've got a buddy who bends exhaust so the $$$ isn't an issue. I'm more concerned with the soud. Which sounds better on a six single or dual??? What do each of them sound like???

Go duals with glasspacks and see how you like the sound. Have the pipes run out the back if you want less noise or dump just in front of the rear wheels for more. If too loud then go to a flowmasters style. My single dumps just in front of the rear wheel - would be very loud with glasspacks. Did that with a dodge powerwagon when younger - dual thrush header mufflers - made a 318 sound much better than it was.
Not sure if a cross-over pipe would make a difference - something to check on.

What cam are you going to use?

I have a pretty similar setup on my truck. 300 engine, clifford intake and headers, duals. With glasspacks, it was incredibly loud above 2000 rpms. Sounded like a cross between an airplane and a machine gun.

Best sound I've found (for my tastes) is a set of reasonably small turbos. Turbo 2s or some of the pricey ones like Flowmasters also would probably give a good rumble without sounding silly.

What don't you like about the 350 2bbl? I've got an Edelbrock 500 4bbl on mine right now, and I think that might be a touch too much carb. It runs decently, but gets terrible gas mileage. Right now, trying to figure out what would be the best setup. I'd rather not end up with a carb collection .

Not a thing wrong with the 350-2 - works great for low RPM torque/throttle response - below 2500 (better than the 450-4) and does fine MPG wise. Performance over 2500 is comparable until you want to put your foot into it and then the 450 was better. LOVE them secondaries!! Mileage was comparable until then.
I would buy a 390-4 if I could justify the expense with my spouse. Started saving for one but it is going to be awhile.
Kick my self for not getting one from the start - was talked out of it by a rep at Clifford.

FYI....dont mill that 300 head more than 0.05". Or it wont self adjust. If you do go more..you need to get taller rocker studs to compesate. As for the exhaust...i got the headers (single out), the 270 cam, 4bbl intake and carb. I ran with out anything for a while and sounded ok till i hit the gas. I then went to flowmaster...Good muff. Also if you get a high flow Cat. that will change the sound to a rasper Flowmaster sound. i liked that...till i ran the cat through...then sounded a lil louder. BUT i heard if you run true dules with the 6 it will make it louder. But you want some back pressure with the 6 to make it run good too. SO its up to you. just find what works good for you. I personaly think that cat back to dules is a great setup.

After much expirementation with my exhaust system, I've found that 2" duals into Cherry Bombs sound good, build enough back pressure, and, don't sound like glasspacks, no rap or the like, they sound more like turbo mufflers. My entire exhaust system ends at the back of the cab, and it isn't too loud, even without cats.
