i recently bought a referbished 4.9 i6 for my 93 ford. i am in the process of swapping all the parts from my old i6 to the new one. once i get the whole bunch together and put back in, i plan to do new exhaust b/c the old engine, right before i took it out, was blowing wet oil through the exhaust- i figure it may be clogged up by now. what would everyone suggest. i want the best sound possible. should i do headers to straights? stock exhaust manifold to high-flow cat, then muffler? do i even want a cat? duals or single? also, the truck at one point had the exhaust redone to single exhaust (the old system rusted off). if single exhaust is what everyone would advise, do i need to get new everything or just muffler/cat or whatever? Thanks for any advice.
Chris
You do want the hi-flow cat. The efi exhaust manifolds are pretty good. Going large on the exhaust is helpful if you drive at high rpm, (more peak horsepower,) but for typical driving it's not necessary. If you are towing, climbing mountains, you might need that larger exhaust. There is a whole lot of very pricey exhaust parts out there, but your local muffler shop can upsize the exhaust using a half inch larger diameter pipe, high flow cat and muffler. Cheaper that way and does the job.
