I am haveing a realy WEIRD problem with the starter on my FIL's 99' 2.3L Ranger. I replaced it the other day, because the Bendix was not engageing the fly-wheel. It has 200K+ miles on it, so I figure time for a new starter. This morning, my MIL calls me and I go rescue her from the grocery store, and its the same problem! I was thinking that mabey a section of teeth from the flywheel were ground out. I manually moved the crankshaft and still no go. I swaped cars with her and was waiting for the tow truck when after just messing with the key, (more out of boredom than anything else) was able to get the truck to start.
Any idea why the bendix wouldnt be shooting out on a new starter? Its an intermittent problem....
