Problem: 1985 Bronco II 4x4 2.8L 5 spd starter will not engage the flywheel. The starter checks out ok but it bendix spins when the starter is engaged. Any suggestions. I was told that possibly the flywheel ban needs replacing.
could very well be the starter solinoid/bendix. to check if it is the flywheel ring put it in gear and give the truck a nudge to move the fly to another spot and then try it. if it is the fly it should catch somewhere, if it is the starter the results will be the same as you are experiencing now.
Had a problem like that on my 84 ranger, after replacign 2 starters and the ring gear I found out that the starter was not shimmed correctly. I added a thin washer on one side and 2 on the other I have not had a problem in 2 years now.
I found the problem. The previous owner stripped the threads on the top bolt on the starter. I drilled and tapped the hole to a size larger and put in a the size bolt. Problem solved.
I spoke too soon. It started grinding and spinning after I started it about 6 times. Guess I will have to pull the trans and have the flywheel ban replaced. Any advice would be appreciated.
thanks

I am not for sure if there was actual different ones. I do know that a 86s will work on a 89 flywheel both auto and manual. I have swapped them with no problem.
