Cool New starter. New problems.

Howdy to all. Finally I've got my new starter for $260 with sipping, removed mine and found flywheel ringear worn.

Teeth are so worn, that sometimes starter wont crank the engine. So I need to purchaise flywheel for auto, cut a ringgear and press it on my flywheel. I'm sad a bit. The problem is that neares dealer who can sale it to my for good price (about $40) is in Moskaw (about 700 miles) and I have to look for someone who can send it to me, becouse they does not sent parts to Ukraine.... unfortunatly....

To inspect all the ringgear I turned engine with 21 mm socket and..... ingnition was on and engine fiered! Fortunatly I used 1/2'' drive ratched and I have electrical fan. I carefully put it away and carefully put hands away from pulleys and belts. So be carefull. It is easy to start aeros engine turnging crankshaft.

That might well be the reason why the cranking speed was low, gears were binding due to incorrect meshing angle from worn flanks. Gear teeth are an involute form, when this form wears friction is increased & gears wont rotate as smoothly. Dont run the new starter gear against the old ring gear, it will marr the teeth.
Also remove rotor arm or coilpack plug next time!
ATB Aeroman.

you have those high compression Mercedes pistons pablo, lots of snap over when they go over TDC

glad you still have all your fingers and no ratchet buried in your forehead, those hurt

how about a junkyard 3L flywheel ring, believe 2.8L also fits, Taurus, Merkur, Ranger etc?
or ring off auto tranny flex plate from 3L since the manual and auto use same starter drive so teeth and pitch must be the same

then click on
" See all vehicles this product fits

any mechanic friends in Moscow? at Volvo or Mercedes truck dealer shops there

2.8/2.9 engines are popular here.... I gonna try to find on junkyard. 3.0 was popular 5-10 years ago. Now this engine is rare here. Today it is age of 4.0 SOHC, 1.5, 1.8, 2.0, 2.9 DOHC and Ford/Pegeout Duratorq Diesel engines....

Cummins engines are popular too.

Ford Cargo with Cummins is popular too. Especially 10 ton truck.

Why not just disconnect the battery?

pablo is missing teeth?

i knew that Mercedes starter had too much power for that little Aero, tore it's teeth right out of it.

i know where you can order an original Henry Ford crank handle that goes in that front hole on the Aero. should have been OEM
will go with those fingers that were turning the ratchet on the crank bolt when she fired

good luck my friend
hope you have it running soon.
how about a starter tooth ring off an auto tranny flex plate?

Unfortunatly to update Aerostar for crank handle is possible installing Niva Taiga ore other especially designed radiator with electric fan... Just look at crankshaft pulley, radiator and fan. But idea is good!

Easily!

Well, I want to make a new tooth ring.

What steel to use?
What thermal treatment requires ring?

Cliff, that's just plain mean. Are you talking about the ring gear or the effect of the spinning ratchet when the engine fired up by itself?

Don't laugh. As a kid, I have actually seen those hand cranks on the old Citroens back in the old country. Actually, I think my Dad's Volkswagen had one of those just in case the starter quit. Dang! I just gave away my age!

Tung,
one learns quickly where to put the thumb with a hand crank engine
we used to start the old John Deere tractors by hand spinning the 24" flywheel, no hand crank needed if one opened the pet*****.
life's too easy now

i can picture pablo out now in the dead of a Ukrainian winter digging his iron ore in the mountains to forge his new toothed ring
you got bull hide gloves for the forge, pablo?

All the russian military trucks have crank handles. Of course nobody use them, but they exist....

OK. 2.9 and 4.0 ring gears dont fit 3.0 flightwheel. They are a bit bigger....

I want to make a teeth ring a bit wider, about 17mm becouse starter drive wheel is 27mm, but stock ring gear is 10 mm only.

For correct forgering special industrial microwave heaters are used.

Why I want to make a new ring? The stock ring is pressed on from side of tranny (impossible to press it from other side becouse I have perfomance clutch and flywheel), I want to make exlusive ring to press it on from side of engine.

The first model of Messerschmidt 109 started with hand crank (and an inertial flywheel), it's not a joke, the engine was a Daimler-Benz 39,0 liters, with 89 octane gas!!!!!!!
