Fuel Milage Report

Well, just thought you all would be interested in this tidbit of information. Took a road-trip to Summit Racing yesterday, which is about a 3 hour drive, and it was the first real trip I've made since installing my tailgate net.

Much to my suprize, my milage jumped ALOT! Before, I was able to get around 220-230 miles per tank, but yesterday I squeezed out 290!!! That's a 21% increase!!! I knew the taildage was creating drag, but not THAT much.

Considering all of my mods, I'm more than happy with getting 18mpg on the highway!!

Im not questioning your claims , but that does seem like a big increase . Let me ask you this , how big is your fuel tank ? Did you drive in the same manner as you did before ? Ive run my truck on long trips with the tailgate down & I never noticed much difference , maybe less than 5 miles more on tank of gas , same road , same speed , same time of yr etc . Is 18 Mpg what you got ? What was your highway mileage before ?

has the stock dual tanks (18gal front, 16gal rear if I remember right). Ran off the rear tank, so 290/16=18.125mpg. As I said before, on prior trips I would only get about 220-230 miles (230/16=14.375mpg).

As for driving style.....it was same as always....cruise control set at 70 the whole way.

Don't forget weather conditions. I once got 41 mpg out of my (former) Ranger on an 800 mile trip across West Texas. Thought my gas gauge was broke, it stayed on F for so long. When I finally did have to stop for fuel, I figured out the cause: a ~35 mph tailwind!

Now, if you got the same mileage coming and going, that would most likely rule out wind as a factor...

Ya just GOTTA love a good stiff tailwind! Now if we could just find a way to eliminate headwinds ... *sigh* You're right though - the wind has a MAJOR impact on your mileage. I've seen 5-10mpg differences in the same vehicle in the same trip (there one day, back the next) just because of how the wind was blowing.

Chris in Canada ... with wonderful winter winds from October to April. (weather dependant! :P )
74 Gran Torino Brougham ... the toy.
84 F150 2WD ... being tuned, getting new oil pressure sending unit, new master cylinder, and a functioning emergency brake as I type. Anyone want the bill?

Headwinds definitely do not agree with the early 80's body styles... the front end is too flat, catches wind bad... but it's sharp looking IMHO... Later 80's models are better, but still not as good...
I remember driving my mom's '88 f150 extended cab 351 modified from lethbridge... got a headwind so bad that even that turner of an engine could barely get me past 100 kph/60 mph... My '82 300-I6 really hates the trip home from lethbridge... Beggin' for a 4bbl that thing is...

ok, if the rear tank is 18gal, then here's the figures:

230 miles per tank = 12.77mpg
290 miles per tank = 16.11mpg

you still get the same percentage of increase in mpg (20.7%)

As for the wind factor, it was a same day round trip and wind was minimal at about 5-10mph. Doubt that would make much of a difference.

yeah, ford rates the rear tank at 16 gal (from a 1990 owners manual, but I've fit 19 gal in it. same with the front. I've put 20 gal in it, after I ran it damn near dry...
