My '93 F150 has had a leak right above the driver side at the top. It started getting worse over the last month so I pulled the trim around the top and used some of the silicone glass repair stuff to seal it around the top where it was leaking. Its was working great untill tonight. I had several of the metal clips that hold the trim on break from rust. So I ordered some from lmc truck. Got them today and went to put them on. As I was trying to remove a clip with the screwdriver I guess I put just the right pressure in the right place to cause the glass to start a crack. It started out as a couple inches and is now prolly 6-8 and I can see it growing slightly still. From what I can read online if it is more then 6 inches it is best to replace the windshield. I have been reading around for the better part of an hour and came across Safelites site. I have a quote of 185 + tax to do the job and they will come out and do it while im at work. Some kind of 45% off holiday special thing. I am a little concerned about it because I have been reading that the windshield is vital to the structural integrity of the vehicle, so I want to make sure they will do the job right and that it will be safe. I also am concerned about some slight rust that is around the windshield valley. Its mostly just surface stuff, no holes or anything. This is also something I am not comfortable doing myself. Has anyone used Safelite before? How was the service? Did they try to charge way more then the quote? Any quirks I should know about?
Safelite has been around a long time and they are a reputable company. I think they also offer a warranty with their install, so I would go with them. You definitely don't want to do this yourself.
The price seems high , because safelite uses Plinkton glass. The glass for you truck is 79.95 jobber price. So they plan on charging you 110.00 for install for a 20 min job. I would call them and see what kind of price they give over the phone.
I forgot to mention the price is for the "mobile service", they will come out to my work and fix it. There may be a "trip charge" in there since anyone coming out would have to drive 30 miles at least to get here.
You might want to check with your insurance company........here in SC windshields are a no-fault item. My Bro-in-law just had his Ranger done in his driveway at home. They will go anywhere to fix it and if you have it done at your house maybe you can do a quick clean-up on the valley after it's out. I'd get some Rustoleum on it anyway.
Well, biased opinion here, Safelite is an ok company, But the windshield is DWO1099GBN. I also own a 93 F-150 and had the the glass crack on me too, Rock chip. Most job quotes ARE stated as come to you unless you got time to go to their shop. Main reason I say this is because they need shelter to do the job right. Around here, this is @ $175.00 - $200.00. But thats Louisville,Ky.
Now, YOU have the choice to get a,,,
Carlite which is OEM/ Factory
PPG replacement
Safelite replacement
BTW, It's Pilkington! They bought out L O F (Libbey-Ford-Owens)
In other words,,,JUNK ! ! !

I am going to call them today and see about maybe getting the crack repaired instead or replacing the whole windshield. Quote is 80 on the website instead. I am also going to check with my insurance company, although I only carry liability here in NC.
EDIT* Insurance will not cover windshield damage.
EDIT2* Going to have them come and try to repair the crack instead.

Reason: Insurance information.
I am a little concerned about it because I have been reading that the windshield is vital to the structural integrity of the vehicle
Your worried about Safelites replacement window being a structural safety issues. A replacement window that must meet or exceed DOT and OEM specifications to even be offered to the public.
Yet a repair on a window with a 8 inch crack in a rusty frame doesn't concern you? Ok!
Sure they will take a tiny burr in a die grinder and cut the very end of the crack to a small radius and then pump in a UV setting type adhesive to try to stop the crack from running, but it probably won't last.
185 bucks is a pretty good "cash" price for it, I'd get the new one.

I have been thinking about it more and more today and have called them back to turn it back into a replacement. Tonight the temperatures have dropped a lot and the glass is cracked even further, well beyond the 6 inches it was intially. I'm just kinda afraid they will get in there and put a whole thru the valley and itll wind up costing me a whole hell of a lot more.
My Insurance co puts them in and it costs me $50 so I would call your Insurance co first they use good companys like ryan glass pro tect or what there is in your area, they also garintee against leaks sorry about the spelling
Got it replaced this morning. It was a good thing too. It was no longer attached at the bottom. The guy had to cut the top around the adhesive, but the bottom just came right out. There was almost no rust, so I was real lucky there. The truck used to be my uncles work truck and he would go back and forth to the beach where he worked. The guy did a real nice job on it and cleaned up real good. He put some black stuff in the channel to prevent rust.
That seems high to me. I had the windshield replaced in my 01 f150 for $125.00 and that included a gas surcharge for traveling 45 miles one way to do it at my work.
