4.2L's in the new ones are slugs by the way. Except one at my old work made me an easy $20 bucks once.
Funny.. I went out to pick up some parts for the first time (first day) in a 4.2L F150 and I couldn't believe how sluggish it was. I'm thinking to myself damn this thing is a V6, for sure. Once I got back I said to the mechanic "Damn that V6 F150 is a slug" and he's like "What are you talking about, it's a V8" and I was very suprised. Well next day I had to go out again and when I stopped en route to get something I popped the hood and sure enough, a V6.
So I come back, and I go directly to the mechanic and say "How much you want to bet that's a V6? $20?" Him "Sure". So we go out.. and of course it's a V6 and I made $20!
Sorry for the long I just remember that moment fondly lol.
I've never heard of the 80 to 96 model years F150 coming with a 3.8L V6. The 300 Inline 6 came into production in 1967 in the F100 and was not discontinued until 1996. So there has never been a V6 in an F150 up until 1997.
Hell, that's just like asking why they discontinued the 5.0L, the last 10 years of that motors life it became one the most popular and longest lasting engines out there. I had an article from mustang monthly, they where working on a 1991 Mustang LX it had 210,000 miles on it and it was still putting 192hp to the ground stock. That is a heck of a motor, I've never heard of a chevy motor doing that.
Ford never put a V6 in a F100 or F150, they did have the 232ci 3.8L V6, but it was put in cars. They also had the 2.9L V6 they put those into the smaller Rangers and Bronco 2's from 1983 to 1989. Then the Explorer came out in 1990 with the 150hp 4.0L V6 and there still using it today, just built a little different. Somebody please back me up on this.
