Got a rock hit a few weeks ago, and of course, the glass cracked the same day so I didn't even have a chance to get it repaired with epoxy.
In NYS, we have $0 deductible glass coverage, with up to 2 incidents a year and no increase in premium allowed. So, went to SafeLite's website, filled in all the information including my insurance policy number, and got a call within 5 minutes!
Setup an appointment, between 8AM and 12 noon today, guy got here around 10:00AM. Nice guy, did a good job, no problems whatsoever. I had removed the wiper arms and facia/cowl so I could clean the crud out from sitting under the trees in my driveway for the past 8 years.
Anyway, the prices, as quoted from the repair order:
Part number for the glass, from Safelite: DW01505 GBY, which after googling it look like a PPG part?
Anyway, wanted to let you all know what to expect, if you needed a windshield, and perhaps if you're paying for it yourself, somewhere to start in the bargaining process
I hope your turns out better than mine Art. I used Safelite on a trip out of town because they were national and I wanted a warranty just in case. Price and service was good, but about 9 months later I noticed on certain days when the sun is out I can stand at around a 70 degree angle and look at my windshield and it looks wavy. Seems ok looking straight through it, but it's one of those things that bugs me. My wife got the replacement front glass that says Super Duty. It cost a lot more, but her window is clearer than mine with no waves.
They also tried to sell me new windshield wipers and said they recommend that with new glass. I declined but thought it sounded like a good idea so I went to the parts store and bought a set of Icon's.
Your glass is new enough Art. I'd take it back to them and ask them about it. They're supposed to have a pretty good warranty. By the time I noticed mine, I already had a small rock chip in it.
And FYI, they still do offer the super duty labeled glass, but be prepared to pay 100 - 150 more for it.
I always, no matter what, recommend the Carlite replacement glass. You will NOT find any aftermarket that can come close the factory (Carlite) glass. Additionally, if you want that "Super Duty" Inscription across the top, you can only have that in a Carlite. As far as insurance carriers in this part of TX, you have the right to specify OEM glass. Be careful though, they may try to sell you 'OEE' or oem equivalent glass, don't take it. Carlite has strict standards on the durability, strength, thickness, as well as optical clarity. As far as having insurance replace your OEE glass because it doesn't adhere to your optical satisfaction standards, good luck, because they more than likely will not budge. One last thing, someone had asked if the OEM glass is still made; why yes, it still is. The Carlite PN for a NON visor/enscripted windshield is DW01505, while the 'Super Duty' third visor is PN DW01522.
In my area (northern Indiana) we have a glass retailer/installer that is a Carlite dealer. That's where I get my glass. I have paid the difference on older vehicles between PPG and Carlite. I'm ok with that as long as it's not too much more.
I've had a windshield replaced by Safelite in my daily commute beater. No collision-comp insurance so it was out of pocket. They beat the next lowest price by a good $50. For a compact rice-burner sedan it was only $164 installed. But that included an extra $12 for as new gasket that they didn't install!
Safelite has contracts with several insurance companies. In some cases when you call your insurance company you're actually getting connected with a Safelite rep that is making appointments for you with one of their independent contractors (some local guys will work as Safelite reps to catch the insurance business). In any event, what that means, when your insurance has a contract with Safelite is that they will pay that amount. If you want "factory" glass (which isn't technically made by the vehicle manufacturer) you would have to pay the difference (maybe insurance pays $270 toward the overall price of factory glass). In some instances you actually get factory glass, depending on what's available to the vendor at the time of install.
I bought a windshield for one of my superdutys cause it had several bulls eyes when I bought the truck. The local glass shop sold me a new Pilkington glass and with the tinted top part the total out the door was only $160 installed. There are zero waves . Pilkington is highly recommended by me as well.
