How much has the 300 six changed over the years. I have a 66 1/2ton pickup with a four speed tranny. What year/s 300's will fit this tranny. I am used to working on C***y's. My 1965 C***y 292 six will fit tranny's made today. Is this the same case with ford 300's? The engine in the ford pickup is a 352. Thanks for the help on my first post.
The 300-6 will not bolt directly up to your 352's tranyy without changing the bellhousing. The 300 has the same tranny bolt pattern as small block Fords. Such as most 289's, all 302's, 351W's and 351 Clevelands. You should not have to change out the whole transmission, just the bellhousing. I have a couple of small block bellhousings laying around but I don't know specifically what tranny's they work with.
People who say it can't be done should not interrupt the person doing it.
The only things that ever changed in the 300's basic design were the fuel pump boss, the rear main seal size(can't use an EFI crank in a carb block and vice versa) and the timing gear construction, they switched from steel/steel to steel/phenolic in 82 for noise reduction(cam is direct gear drive in the 300.)

Evan, I believe Ford added valve rotators in about 79. Also there was a heavy duty version with forged steel crank and other beefed up parts that was used mostly in big trucks and busses.
what year did ford change rear seal size on the 300 I put a 87 efi crank in a 81 block with no problems or leaks. the cam bearing o/d was changed sometime between 81-87 also.
Oops, I forgot about the rotators, and, yes there is a HD, I have 4 of them..... And there's an oddball recessed 300 out there too, it has flat top pistons and a 7.9:1 cr... I'm not sure when they changed it, your crank may be an early 87 or late 86, a friend of mine couldn't put his 85 crank in his 87 block.... Never heard of the change in the cam bearing size, probably because the ID is the same.

OK i need to know every exact difference in a 79' 300l6 and a 88 300l6 with efi
im trying to make the swap with blocks because my 88 after 200,000 miles has finally took a rest. But so far i know i have to change heads to for the air ports but what im wondering about is the distributor. Is it possible for my efi version to slide right into the older block or would i have to change oil pumps or what???
Yup, the dizzy will drop right in with no problems. Timing it is the fun part....

Evan, I'm looking at mail-ordering a 300 short-block kit; aside from a fuel pump blockoff plate, will a pre-EFI shortblock work with a '91 neutral-balance flywheel/clutch assembly? My '91's original flywheel had a C5TA prefix on the central casting, so I suspect those guys are interchangeable, and I know all the six-bolt SBF bellhousings interchange. PAW do custom shortblock, including the 300, but only up to '86.
Do dampers interchange between EFI and pre-EFI blocks?
Do the serpentine accessory brackets work with V-Belt blocks and heads?
I know you have plenty of examples of each type--get out your tape measure and calipers!
Well, here goes, if anyone can prove me wrong, please do so.
The flywheel should be compatable, the 300 was always internally balanced. The dampers should be interchangeable if there wasn't a change in the balance specs, but, I doubt there was.
Yes, the serpentine brackets will work, Thad even sez so.... If I didn't need to keep at least one V-belt(to run my air compressor,) I'd switch to serpentine myself.... Plenty examples of each type Ed? You mean too many.....

Thanks, dude. This is shaping up to be an interesting motor!
I'm getting in on the Fisher Damper group buy, and my plan was to get one that matches the serpentine system (that's why I sent Fisher a junk '87 damper).
I think I'll do some interchangeability research via my tame Ford parts guy, just to be 100%!
